“There is my heir.”

Victor Vale’s words hung in the frozen air outside the Copper Harbor daycare.

Damon stepped between his uncle and Caleb so quickly that the attorneys behind Victor recoiled.

Snow gathered on Damon’s shoulders, but he seemed not to notice the cold.

His eyes were fixed on the medical audit report trembling slightly in his hand.

Caleb stood behind me, one small fist wrapped around the back of my coat.

He was usually fearless around strangers.

That morning, he had gone completely silent.

Victor’s attorney opened a leather case and removed a document stamped by a county clerk.

“We have filed an emergency guardianship petition,” he announced.

“Mrs.

Vale concealed a beneficiary of the Vale family trust and deprived his father of parental access.”

“A petition isn’t a court order,” I said.

My voice sounded calmer than I felt.

Victor studied me with the detached interest of a man examining an obstacle he had already paid someone to remove.

“You vanished under a false name,” he said.

“You denied this family knowledge of its bloodline.

A judge will find that concerning.”

“His name is Caleb Ellis.

He is a child, not a bloodline.”

Damon lifted the audit report.

Beside the date of my pregnancy confirmation was a digital access code registered to the chairman’s office of the Vale Foundation.

Victor’s office.

“You knew she was pregnant,” Damon said.

Victor’s face remained smooth.

“I knew there was a possibility.”

“You accessed a private medical file.”

“The clinic was funded by our foundation.”

“That did not make her body your property.”

For the first time, something sharp entered Victor’s eyes.

“Your sentimentality is why we are standing in the snow negotiating with a daycare worker.”

Damon folded the report once, carefully.

I recognized that movement.

He did it when rage became too dangerous to show.

A third vehicle stopped behind the SUVs.

The driver was Elias Grant, Damon’s longtime security chief.

I had known Elias in Chicago as the quiet man who checked every room before Damon entered it.

He stepped out holding a phone.

“Before anyone touches the child,” Elias said, “the Vale board would like Victor to explain why he illegally accessed a pregnant woman’s medical file.”

He pressed the speaker button.

A woman’s voice filled the frozen street.

“Victor, we are listening.”

Victor’s composure cracked for less than a second.

Then he smiled again.

“Celeste, this is a family matter.”

“You used foundation credentials,” Celeste Rowan replied.

She was the independent director of Vale Global and one of the few people in Chicago who had never seemed frightened of either Vale brother.

“That makes it a corporate matter.

Your access has been suspended pending investigation.”

Victor looked at Elias.

“You betrayed me for him?”

“I work for the company,” Elias said.

“Not for whichever Vale happens to be shouting.”

Caleb pulled harder on my coat.

“Mom,” he whispered, “who are those men?”
