The third page slid across the hospital table and landed beside Catherine’s newborn daughter.

Michael moved first.

He reached for it so quickly that one of the security officers caught his wrist before his fingers touched the paper.

“Let go of me,” Michael snapped.

“That document belongs to my wife.”

Catherine stared at him from the bed.

Her body was still trembling from labor, but the fear inside her had become something colder and clearer.

“Then why are you afraid of me reading it?” she asked.

Michael stopped struggling.

Dr.

Daniel Brooks picked up the page and placed it gently in Catherine’s hands.

It was a witness certification.

Someone had sworn that Catherine had signed the sterilization consent voluntarily, while fully informed and free from pressure.

The witness’s name was Amber Collins.

Catherine read it twice.

Amber had not merely slept with her husband while she was in labor.

She had signed a medical document claiming she had personally watched Catherine surrender control over her own body.

Rachel leaned over the bed and photographed every page.

Michael’s expression hardened.

“This is being misunderstood.”

Dr.

Brooks faced him.

“Your wife says she never signed these forms.”

“She’s exhausted.

She was given medication.”

“I asked you a question about the documents.”

“And I’m telling you she isn’t thinking clearly.” Michael turned toward the nurses, lowering his voice as if he were the calmest person in the room.

“Catherine has been emotionally unstable for months.

That is why we made arrangements before the delivery.”

The charge nurse, Maya Patel, looked at him without blinking.

“You told us she might make that accusation,” Maya said.

Michael’s confidence flickered.

Catherine looked at the nurse.

“He spoke to you before tonight?”

Maya nodded.

“The documents were uploaded shortly before midnight.

Your husband called the unit afterward and asked us to confirm that the sterilization would be completed if you required surgery.”

Catherine felt as if the air had been pulled from the room.

Michael had not simply abandoned her after labor began.

He had been arranging the trap while she was still at home, packing the baby’s clothes and wondering why he was late.

Dr.

Brooks continued.

“When the nurse explained that no procedure would be performed without confirming consent directly with the patient, your husband became aggressive.

He claimed you might deny signing because of a psychiatric condition.”

“That is not true,” Catherine said.

“I know,” Dr.

Brooks replied.

“Your prenatal record contains no diagnosis supporting that claim.

There is also no documentation that anyone counseled you about permanent sterilization.”

Michael gave a short, humorless laugh.

“You met her an hour ago.

I’ve been married to her for eleven years.”

“And she is still the patient,” Dr.

Brooks said.

“Not your property.”

The room fell silent.

Michael glanced toward the bassinet.

Catherine saw the calculation in his eyes before he moved.

He stepped toward the baby.

“Don’t touch her,” Catherine said.

Michael froze.

“That is my daughter.”

“She is not a possession either.”

One security officer moved between Michael and the bassinet.

The second asked him to step into the hallway.

Michael refused.

Then his phone illuminated on the table where he had dropped it.

Amber’s message filled the locked screen.
