Nathan’s recorded voice rolled through the ballroom with brutal clarity.

“Ava is in Seattle.

She won’t know a thing.”

On the twelve-foot screen behind him, he pulled Vanessa Hart closer beneath the airport’s white arrival lights and kissed her while she held the bouquet of ivory roses he had chosen with more care than he had shown me in years.

No one in the Grand Hawthorne ballroom moved.

Six hundred people had just applauded Nathan for integrity.

Now they watched him betray his wife in high definition.

Nathan stood beneath the screen gripping his crystal award.

The confident smile he had carried onto the stage disappeared, but only for a moment.

He recovered quickly, as he always did when something threatened his image.

“Turn that off,” he ordered.

His voice was no longer warm or grateful.

It was the voice he used at home when he believed obedience should be immediate.

In the production booth, Lena kept her hand away from the controls.

Vanessa rose from her seat so fast that her chair tipped backward.

The crash echoed through the silence.

She clutched her purse against her side and looked toward the nearest exit.

Two members of the hospital compliance office were already standing in the aisle.

They had arrived shortly before the awards program began, after the board’s compliance chair received the packet my attorney had delivered.

I had not known whether they would act publicly.

I had only made certain they could not later claim that the evidence had disappeared.

Nathan looked at me.

“Ava,” he said through his teeth, “stop this now.”

I stood beside the stage steps, close enough to see the pulse beating hard in his neck.

“The video is almost finished.”

On the screen, airport Nathan took Vanessa’s suitcase and placed his hand at the small of her back.

Her recorded voice asked, “And your wife?”

Then came his answer again.

“Ava is in Seattle.

She won’t know a thing.”

The image froze.

The ballroom lights rose slowly, revealing hundreds of faces turned toward the stage.

Some guests stared openly.

Others looked down at their tables, suddenly fascinated by untouched desserts and folded napkins.

The hospital president, Margaret Bell, remained beside Nathan.

She had spent the previous five minutes praising his character.

Now she held the envelope I had placed in her hands.

She opened it.

Nathan saw the first page and stepped toward her.

“Margaret, this is a marital issue.

It has no place here.”

She moved the papers out of his reach.

“Then why does this packet contain confidential procurement documents?”

A ripple passed through the room.

Vanessa stopped moving toward the exit.

Nathan glanced at her, and in that single glance I saw something colder than panic.

He was calculating which of them could be sacrificed first.

Margaret turned another page.

“These are internal scores from the cardiac technology review committee.

They were not authorized for distribution.”

The board’s compliance chair, Samuel Price, rose from the front table.

He was a careful man who rarely raised his voice, which made his next words more frightening.

“Dr.

Cole, before you leave this stage, you will explain why your private notes contain the confidential evaluations of three companies competing against Hart Medical Systems.”

Nathan placed the award on the lectern.

“I have access
