Jack stared up at me through the glass walkway as if I had appeared from the dead.

His phone continued vibrating in his hand.

Each new notification stripped away another piece of the confidence he had worn so easily minutes earlier.

The gate agent tried scanning Carol’s boarding pass again.

The machine flashed red.

“I told you, it worked ten minutes ago,” Carol snapped.

“It has been voided by the purchaser,” the agent replied.

“The same applies to the other reservations in this group.”

Ashley pushed forward.

“That’s impossible.

My brother paid for these.”

Gerald’s voice remained in my ear.

“No,” he said after hearing her through the phone.

“He didn’t.”

Two airport security officers arrived at the gate, not because Gerald had summoned them, but because Jack had begun shouting at the airline staff.

One officer raised a calming hand while the other positioned himself between Jack and the counter.

The blonde woman stepped away from my husband.

Her name, I would soon learn, was Vanessa Cole.

Jack had told her that our divorce had been finalized months earlier.

He had told her I had refused to accept the end of the marriage and that his family was helping him build a peaceful new life.

He had even shown her a document with my forged signature.

At that moment, however, all Vanessa knew was that the wealthy surgeon who claimed to own a medical group could no longer pay for a flight.

“What is happening?” she asked him.

Jack ignored her.

His eyes stayed fixed on me.

Then he pointed.

“Megan!”

Everyone at the gate looked up.

Carol followed his finger.

The moment she saw me, the anger disappeared from her face.

Ashley lowered her phone.

Our children turned last.

Their expressions were not guilty.

They were confused.

That mattered.

Jack had told them I was attending a conference and had chosen not to join the trip.

He had also told them Vanessa was a family friend who would be helping him with a hospital charity project.

They had seen the kiss, but Jack had spent months teaching them that our marriage was already over.

I understood that later.

In the moment, all I could see was the photograph Ashley had taken of my family without me.

Gerald interrupted my thoughts.

“Megan, the transfer request is still active.

Someone is trying to move six hundred and forty thousand dollars from the reserve account.”

“Can you stop it?”

“I already did.

But the authorization came from Carol’s credentials.”

I looked down at my mother-in-law.

Carol was staring at Jack’s screen.

He said something to her, and she shook her head too quickly.

“She had credentials?” I asked.

“She had Jack’s credentials,” Gerald corrected.

“He gave her access that he had no authority to share.”

My father had created Walker Surgical Properties twenty-six years earlier.

He owned the buildings where Jack and several other surgeons operated, along with the management company that handled leases, equipment, and administrative services.

When my father became ill, Jack began representing him at meetings.
