Ryan’s voice filled the BMW with brutal clarity.

“Get out and take that child with you.”

The recording captured the passenger door swinging open, freezing rain slashing through the light, and Emily stepping onto the shoulder with three-week-old Noah pressed against her chest.

It captured Ryan reaching across the console to take her phone.

It captured the lock clicking before he drove away.

No one spoke when the video ended.

The young police officer, whose badge identified him as Officer Bell, turned slowly toward Ryan.

A moment earlier, Ryan had been describing Emily as confused, unstable, and dangerous.

Now his mouth opened twice without producing a sound.

Emily remained inside the warm BMW, one hand beneath Noah’s head and the other gripping the silver pendant at her throat.

Her soaked sweatshirt clung to her skin.

She was shaking so hard that Julian Mercer removed his overcoat and tucked it around her shoulders without asking her to release the baby.

Ryan recovered first.

“That doesn’t show what happened before,” he said.

“She was hysterical.

She threatened to jump out.

I stopped because she demanded it.”

Officer Bell glanced at the closed passenger door visible in the footage.

“She demanded that you keep her phone?”

“I was trying to protect her.”

“From calling for help?”

Ryan’s face tightened.

A second cruiser arrived, followed by an ambulance.

Two paramedics hurried toward Emily.

When one of them reached for Noah, she instinctively pulled him closer.

“I’m not taking him away from you,” the woman said gently.

“I only need to check his temperature while you hold him.”

Noah’s skin was cool, but his breathing was steady.

The paramedic wrapped him in a heated blanket and guided Emily toward the ambulance.

As Emily stood, pain pulled through her abdomen.

She was still recovering from childbirth, and every hurried step reminded her that Ryan had known exactly how physically vulnerable she was when he put her outside.

Ryan moved toward her.

“Emily, come home.

We can fix this.”

Julian stepped between them.

“You will not speak to her unless she asks you to.”

Ryan gave him a contemptuous look.

“You still haven’t said who you are.”

Julian opened the black leather folder.

“Julian Mercer.

Attorney, trustee of the Eleanor Mercer estate, and Lena Carter’s brother.”

Ryan’s expression changed so quickly that Emily almost missed it.

Surprise came first.

Then recognition.

Finally, fear.

Julian noticed it too.

“You know the name,” he said.

“I’ve never heard of you.”

“Then it is remarkable that a document bearing your electronic signature was submitted to my office three days ago.”

Officer Bell looked up.

“What kind of document?”

Julian removed several pages from the folder but kept them in his hand.

“A spousal authorization and preliminary guardianship declaration.

It states that Emily Carter is suffering from a severe postpartum psychiatric condition and cannot manage her financial affairs.

It appoints Ryan Carter as her representative.”

Emily felt the air leave her lungs.

Two nights earlier, Ryan had placed papers beside her dinner plate while Noah slept in a bassinet.

He told her they were insurance forms required to add the baby to his policy.

When she tried to read them, he became irritated and said she was making everything difficult.

She had signed only the first page before Noah began crying.
