Grant stared at the sealed evidence bag as though the phone inside it were a live explosive.
For the first time since I had entered the Harlow mansion, he had nothing clever to say.
The investigator placed the bag beside the cream-colored trust agreement.
Through the clear plastic, I could see a black phone with a cracked corner and a gold monogram on the case.
G.H.
Grant’s private device.
His family attorney stood abruptly.
“Where did you obtain that?”
“From a vehicle registered to Harlow Meridian Holdings,” the investigator replied.
“A vehicle abandoned this morning behind a storage facility currently under state warrant.”
Evelyn’s face tightened.
“This is harassment.
My husband will have your badges before sunset.”
Daniel finally looked up from my gray file.
“Mrs.
Harlow, your husband has been advised not to contact anyone connected to this inquiry.
That includes judges, hospital officials, law enforcement officers, and political donors.
Every call will be preserved.”
The room became so still that I could hear the antique clock ticking in the corridor.
Lily sat beside me with one hand resting protectively over her stomach.
She was breathing too quickly.
I moved my chair closer and covered her hand with mine.
“Look at me,” I whispered.
“You are not alone anymore.”
Grant heard me.
“Don’t fill her head with fantasies,” he said.
“None of this changes what she is.
She’s unstable.
Everyone in this house has seen it.”
The young maid, Sofia, stepped forward from the doorway.
“We saw what you did to her.”
Grant turned slowly.
Sofia was barely twenty, small enough that the silver serving tray she usually carried looked oversized in her hands.
That night, however, she held only her phone.
Her fingers trembled, but her voice did not.
“Mrs.
Harlow told us never to enter the east wing when you were talking to Lily.
She said Lily needed privacy.
But I heard screaming.
I started recording from the service corridor.”
Evelyn’s expression hardened.
“You signed a confidentiality agreement.”
“A confidentiality agreement does not cover crimes,” Daniel said.
Sofia unlocked her phone and handed it to the investigator.
He connected it to a portable evidence device and created a verified copy while we watched.
The first video began without sound for two seconds.
The image showed Lily standing near the unfinished nursery, one hand braced against the crib.
Then Grant entered the frame.
“You will sign the trust agreement,” he said.
Lily’s recorded voice was weak.
“That money is for my future.
For the baby.”
“The baby is a Harlow.
Everything connected to her belongs under Harlow control.”
Evelyn appeared behind the camera in the reflection of a nursery mirror.
