The security screen blinked to life, filling the conference-room wall with a wide view of Peterson Global’s marble lobby.

Tom Peterson stood at the head of the table with Elena’s brown envelope in one hand.

His six-year-old daughter, Khloe, stayed close to his side, clutching her unicorn water bottle against her blue dress.

At the far end of the table, cleaning supervisor Brent Cole stared at the frozen image on the screen.

His face had lost the confidence he had worn downstairs.

The head of security moved the recording back to 7:42 that morning.

Elena appeared near the staff corridor carrying a small lunch bag.

Even on the grainy video, her exhaustion was obvious.

Her shoulders sagged beneath her light blue uniform, and she paused twice to steady herself against the wall.

Brent stepped into her path.

The security system had recently been upgraded to include audio in public corridors.

A moment later, his voice came through the speakers.

“Where do you think you’re going?”

“I need ten minutes,” Elena answered.

“My blood sugar is dropping.

I filed the medical forms.”

She pulled back her sleeve and showed him a thin medical bracelet.

Brent did not look at it.

“The lobby is full.

Put the food away.”

“I started at five.

I haven’t stopped.”

“I already marked your break as taken.”

Several executives standing along the conference-room wall exchanged uneasy glances.

On the recording, Brent took Elena’s lunch bag from her hand, opened the supply room, and placed it on a shelf inside.

Then he locked the door and slipped the key into his pocket.

“You can have it after the morning rush,” he said.

“Unless you’d rather have no shift tomorrow.”

Elena remained still for a moment.

Then she lowered her sleeve and walked back toward the lobby.

The footage continued.

At 8:16, she stumbled while lifting a trash bag.

At 8:34, she leaned against the reception desk and asked another cleaner for a piece of candy.

Brent appeared before the woman could answer and sent the other cleaner to another floor.

At 8:51, Elena tried to enter the staff corridor again.

Brent pointed toward a spilled coffee near the elevators.

At 9:07, she nearly fell.

A senior vice president walked around her.

At 9:09, she collapsed beside Khloe.

The recording showed everything that had happened afterward: employees stepping aside, phones rising to film, Brent ordering Elena to stand, and Khloe kneeling beside her with the water bottle.

Then came the moment that made Brent grip the edge of the table.

Elena reached toward the brown envelope hidden behind her cleaning supplies.

Brent saw it.

He kicked the cart, sending the envelope beneath the marble table.

His recorded voice filled the conference room.

“There’s nothing in there that will save you.”

Tom paused the video.

No one spoke.

He looked toward the executives who had walked past Elena that morning.

One studied the floor.

Another folded her arms tightly across her chest.

The young analyst who had hesitated in the lobby appeared close to tears.

Tom turned to Brent.

“You denied a medically vulnerable employee access to food, falsified her break record, threatened her job, and attempted to hide documents.

Which part do you believe we have misunderstood?”
