The security officer closed the hospital-room door, and Daniel Hale pressed play.

Vanessa’s voice filled the room.

“Once he signs, the company is ours.

He still thinks the marriage gives him control of my shares.

By the time he realizes what he agreed to, it won’t matter.”

A man’s voice answered, too faint for me to recognize.

“And the ex-wife?”

Vanessa laughed.

“She’s irrelevant.

Ryan believes the baby is gone.

He won’t go looking for either of them.”

The recording stopped.

No one spoke.

Ryan stood beside my daughter’s crib with the white wedding folder still crushed in his hand.

He looked as if someone had hollowed him out from the inside.

Vanessa recovered first.

“That recording is illegal,” she said.

Daniel looked at her with a coldness that made even my mother step back.

“It was recorded in my office, on my company’s security system, after several confidential files disappeared.”

“You were spying on me?”

“I was protecting the business you were trying to steal.”

Ryan stared at Vanessa.

“You told me Emma lost the baby.”

Vanessa crossed her arms.

Her ivory dress was immaculate, but the muscles in her jaw had begun to twitch.

“You wanted to believe it.”

“No.”

“Yes, Ryan.

You did.

You wanted a clean promotion, a clean divorce, and a clean new marriage.

I simply removed the mess.”

The cruelty of it settled over the room.

My daughter shifted in her crib and made a soft sound.

Ryan flinched as though it had struck him.

I reached for her immediately.

The nurse helped lift her into my arms, then remained beside the bed.

She had witnessed enough to understand that no one was leaving me alone with these people.

Daniel placed the sealed envelope on the rolling table.

“There are two matters here,” he said.

“The attempted fraud against my company, and the deception involving Emma’s pregnancy.

They overlap more than you realize.”

Vanessa took one step toward him.

The security officer moved between them.

Daniel opened the envelope and removed a stack of documents.

The first was a sworn statement from Vanessa’s former assistant, Clara Mills.

The second was a report from a private investigator.

The third contained copies of emails redirected from Ryan’s old address.

My name appeared again and again.

Ultrasound appointment.

Prenatal screening.

Emergency contact request.

Delivery estimate.

Every message I had sent during the first months of pregnancy had been forwarded to an account controlled by Vanessa.

Ryan took the papers with trembling hands.

“I never saw these.”

“You never asked to see them,” I said.

He looked at me, and for once there was no defense ready on his tongue.

That mattered.

It did not excuse him.

Vanessa might have hidden my messages, but she had not forced him to accuse me of trapping him.

She had not made him file for divorce.

She had not written NOT MY PROBLEM across our baby’s ultrasound envelope.

Ryan had done those things himself.

Daniel seemed to read the thought on my face.

“Manipulation explains part of what happened,” he said to Ryan.

“It does not absolve you of abandoning your wife.”

Ryan lowered his eyes.

Vanessa let out a sharp laugh.

“Please.

Everyone in this room is pretending Emma is innocent because she has a baby in her arms.

She
