The investigator placed a recorder on Alistair Sterling’s desk and pressed the red button.

The tiny click seemed louder than the traffic forty floors below.

Alistair stood behind his desk with Serena’s letter crushed in one fist.

Across from him, three members of Sterling Global’s board waited beside the company’s general counsel.

The housekeeper, Elena Ruiz, remained near the door in her gray uniform, hands clasped tightly at her waist.

On the desk lay the clinic invoice that had detonated his marriage.

Patient: Marissa Vale.

Gestational age: twenty-one weeks.

Father: Alistair James Sterling.

“Mrs.

Ruiz,” the investigator said, “tell us what you witnessed yesterday morning.”

Alistair’s eyes hardened.

“She is household staff.

She has no knowledge of my private affairs.”

Elena looked at him for the first time.

“I know what I heard.”

She described Serena opening the envelope at breakfast.

She repeated Alistair’s demand that Serena stop embarrassing herself.

She told them how he had referred to Serena’s pregnancy as her position and how he later ordered the penthouse manager to prevent her from removing luggage.

Alistair laughed once, but no one joined him.

“You are turning a marital disagreement into corporate theater.”

The investigator slid a second document from the evidence folder.

It was the written instruction Alistair had sent to his security director at 11:42 that morning: Do not permit Mrs.

Sterling to leave with company property, financial records, or luggage until I approve it personally.

“She was carrying my child,” Alistair said.

“I was concerned about her emotional state.”

“You canceled her travel access, disabled her household card, and restricted her movement within hours of her discovering an affair with one of your employees,” the investigator replied.

“That may be described differently by a court.”

One of the board members, Margaret Chen, leaned toward the red folder.

“What exactly did Serena file?”

The general counsel swallowed before answering.

“A conditional suspension of the foundational patent license.”

Alistair’s expression did not change, but his fingers loosened around the letter.

Sterling Global’s public story began with Alistair: the young financier who transformed a regional freight company into an international logistics empire.

Magazine profiles praised his instincts, discipline, and appetite for risk.

What those profiles rarely mentioned was Serena’s father, Daniel Rowe.

Daniel had designed the routing technology that made Sterling Global profitable.

Years before Alistair entered the company, Daniel placed his patents in the Rowe Family Trust to prevent hostile investors from stripping them away.

When Serena inherited control of the trust, she granted Sterling Global a renewable license.

Alistair had treated that license as permanent.

It was not.

The agreement contained a protective clause allowing Serena to suspend it if a controlling executive used corporate resources to conceal fraud, coercion, or an undisclosed relationship with an employee that created financial liability for the company.

Marissa Vale was not merely Alistair’s mistress.

She was Sterling Global’s Director of Special Projects.

Her Portland travel, apartment, medical visits, and consulting expenses had been paid through corporate accounts.

The affair had become a company matter the moment Alistair billed it to shareholders.

Margaret turned toward him.

“Did you authorize those expenses?”

“They were legitimate business costs.”

“For prenatal appointments?”

Alistair’s jaw tightened.

The investigator opened Marissa’s expense file.
