The judge pressed play.

On the courtroom monitor, a grainy bank-security video showed Daniel entering a private lending office three months earlier.

He wore the same navy overcoat he had owned for years.

Beside him walked a woman with her hair tucked beneath a scarf, wearing my tan coat and carrying a handbag I had reported missing.

The woman turned toward the camera.

Olivia’s face filled the screen.

No one spoke.

Daniel’s attorney stopped writing.

The courtroom clerk leaned closer to the monitor.

Even the judge, who had spent the morning listening to couples accuse one another of every imaginable betrayal, appeared momentarily stunned.

In the video, Olivia removed my driver’s license from the stolen handbag and slid it across the desk.

The audio was faint but clear enough.

The bank officer asked, “Ms.

Carter, do you understand that this credit line will be secured by Carter Rehabilitation Group?”

Olivia nodded.

Daniel answered for her.

“My wife understands.”

My hands tightened around the edge of the table.

I had watched the recording twice in Rachel’s office, yet seeing it in the courtroom still made my stomach turn.

Daniel had not merely betrayed our marriage.

He had sat beside another woman while she pretended to be me and risked the business I had spent years building.

The judge paused the video.

“Mr.

Carter,” she said, “is that you?”

Daniel’s face had lost all color.

“The footage is misleading.”

“Is that you?”

“Yes, but Emma knew about the loan.”

Rachel rose.

“My client was treating patients at her clinic during the entire meeting.

We have appointment records, employee statements, building-access logs, and timestamped medical notes.”

Daniel turned toward me.

“Tell her.

You knew I was arranging financing.”

“I knew you wanted money,” I said.

“I did not know you planned to steal my identity to get it.”

Olivia pushed her chair back slightly.

“Daniel told me Emma had agreed.

He said the bank needed someone to appear because she was too pregnant and emotional to attend.”

Daniel looked at her as though she had struck him.

“You knew exactly what we were doing.”

“No,” Olivia whispered.

“You said it was a formality.”

The judge lifted one hand.

“Neither of you will speak unless addressed.”

Rachel opened the red folder again.

The loan had provided Daniel with $640,000.

Within forty-eight hours, $310,000 had been transferred to a company called Lakefront Development Holdings.

That company had purchased the luxury apartment where I later saw Daniel and Olivia together.

Another $75,000 had gone toward renovations, designer furniture, and a custom walk-in closet.

Forty thousand dollars had been transferred to a wedding planner.

The rest had paid Daniel’s personal credit cards, Olivia’s car lease, jewelry, hotel stays, and deposits for what they had been calling their new life.

The life they were celebrating had been built by placing my clinic at risk.

Daniel’s lawyer stood.

“Your Honor, these allegations belong in a separate civil proceeding.
