Serena’s recorded voice floated across the parking lot.

“Once the money clears, what happens to Olivia?”

For one suspended second, no one moved.

The sound had come from the investigator’s phone, but Andrew stared at Olivia as though she had spoken.

His face had lost the controlled expression he wore in photographs, ceremonies, and official briefings.

Even his shoulders seemed smaller without the authority he normally carried into a room.

Then his voice emerged, unmistakable despite the faint background noise.

“She won’t know until it’s too late.

By then, the foundation will be tied to the project, and she won’t risk humiliating her family by exposing it.”

Serena backed away from the Tahoe.

“You recorded me?”

Special Agent Mara Keene stopped the audio.

“The recording was recovered from a deleted voice-memo file.

It appears your phone captured the conversation automatically after you activated the recorder during an earlier meeting.”

Andrew pointed toward Olivia.

“Her family controls the servers.

They could manufacture anything.”

Marcus Langford had just crossed the street carrying Olivia’s tablet in a clear evidence bag.

He wore no expensive suit and brought no entourage.

He looked like a tired older brother who had driven too quickly after hearing that someone had placed his nephew’s future beneath a fraudulent signature.

“The file didn’t come from our servers,” Marcus said.

“It came from Ms.

Vale’s cloud backup.

Your investigators retrieved it before our attorneys knew it existed.”

Serena looked at Andrew.

“You said there was no backup.”

“Stop talking.”

Keene’s eyes hardened.

“Commander Whitaker, you do not get to direct anyone’s statement now.”

In the SUV across the street, Ethan slept with cinnamon sugar on one cheek.

Olivia could see him through the rear window.

That small, ordinary detail steadied her more than anything else could have.

She turned back to the folder.

The first page contained the $2.4 million bridge guarantee for Vale Strategic Solutions.

Her name appeared at the bottom in a close imitation of her signature.

The next page identified Ethan’s education trust as secondary security if Serena’s company failed to satisfy the repayment schedule.

Olivia read the line twice.

“How could they list his trust without the trustee’s approval?”

Marcus answered quietly.

“They couldn’t.

Someone uploaded a counterfeit approval bearing your credentials.”

Andrew found his voice again.

“It was temporary.

The account was never going to be touched.”

Olivia looked at him for the first time since he had walked out of the building.

“So you knew about it.”

He realized his mistake immediately.

“That isn’t what I said.”

“You said it was temporary.”

“I was speaking hypothetically.”

Keene made a note.

Serena pressed one hand against her mouth.

Her cream coat, so polished behind the second-floor window, now hung open and crooked.

“Andrew told me the trust was controlled by the foundation.

He said it was just a technical guarantee.”
