Laura’s recorded voice rolled through the concert hall lobby with perfect clarity.

“Again, Chloe.

This time, when they ask if Daddy hurt you, don’t hesitate before you say yes.”

Nobody moved.

The applause from the recital had ended only minutes earlier, but families still crowded the lobby beneath the gold lights.

Children clutched flowers.

Parents held cameras.

Chloe’s piano teacher stood beside the sound table with one hand over her mouth.

My wife stared at the tablet as if it were a weapon pointed at her.

Then she rushed forward.

“Turn that off.”

The uniformed officer stepped between Laura and Chloe before she reached the controls.

“Ma’am, stay where you are.”

Laura stopped so suddenly that her heels scraped the tile.

She pointed at me.

“He did this.

He made her record me.

He has been manipulating her for months.”

I did not answer.

I had already decided that anything I said would be twisted into anger, intimidation, or proof that Laura’s story was true.

The video continued.

On the screen, Chloe sat at her keyboard in yesterday’s clothes.

Laura stood behind her with the brown legal folder resting beside the sheet music.

“What happens if I tell them no?” Chloe asked in the recording.

Laura’s voice softened into the patient tone she used when persuading someone to accept something cruel.

“Then your father will take the house, and we may have nowhere to live.

You don’t want that, do you?”

Recorded Chloe shook her head.

“Once he signs the house over, everything will be safe.

But the counselor has to believe you’re afraid of him.”

A murmur moved through the lobby.

Laura’s mother, Diane, lowered the phone she had been using to film my supposed public collapse.

She began edging toward the exit.

Mr.

Bell caught her lightly by the arm.

“Nobody should leave until this is clarified.”

His confidence had disappeared.

The brown folder he had pressed against my chest now hung at his side.

Laura spun toward him.

“You are my attorney.

Do something.”

He released Diane’s arm.

“I am attempting to understand why this recording exists.”

“Because Daniel set me up.”

The school counselor, Ms.

Greene, looked from Laura to Chloe.

“Mrs.

Mercer, you told me your daughter had spontaneously disclosed physical abuse this morning.”

“She did.”

Chloe stepped closer to me, though she did not touch me.

“No, I didn’t,” she said.

Laura’s face tightened.

“Chloe, you are confused.”

“I’m not.”

“Sweetheart, your father has frightened you.”

Chloe’s shoulders folded inward.

For one terrible moment, I thought she might retreat into silence.

Then my sister Elena walked through the lobby doors.

She still wore the dark green suit she used for court.

Her hair was pinned back, and she carried a sealed envelope in one hand and several printed pages in the other.

Elena did not come to me first.

She went directly to the officer.

“I’m Elena Mercer, Daniel’s attorney and sister.

I received the original video file from Chloe’s tablet twenty-six minutes ago.

I preserved the metadata and sent a copy to my firm’s secure server.”

Laura gave a sharp laugh.

“Of course you did.

This entire family protects him.”

Elena held up the printed pages.

“Before anyone removes my brother from his home, you need to compare that recording with what Laura
