The kennel door swung open, and Daniel Bennett forgot how to breathe.

Lily was folded into the far corner, her small body curved around Noah like a shield.

She had taken off her cardigan and wrapped it around the baby beneath the thin blanket Vanessa had thrown inside.

Rain dripped through a split in the cedar roof and darkened Lily’s hair.

Her lips had lost their color.

Noah’s face was red from crying.

His eyes were half closed, and every breath came with a tired little whimper.

“Dad,” Lily whispered.

“He’s too hot.”

Daniel dropped to his knees in the mud.

“I’ve got you.”

The words broke as they left him.

He reached inside, but Lily flinched before she recognized his hands.

That single movement struck him harder than anything Vanessa could have said.

His daughter had learned to fear an adult reaching toward her.

Daniel took Noah first and placed him inside his coat.

Then he lifted Lily from the kennel.

She weighed almost nothing against his chest.

Vanessa hurried across the wet grass behind him.

“Daniel, don’t encourage this.

She locked herself in there.”

Marcus, the security chief, looked from the steel bolt hanging outside the door to Vanessa’s face.

Daniel did not raise his voice.

“Call Dr.

Patel.

Call the police.

Tell them two children were deliberately confined outside in the rain.”

Vanessa stared at him.

“You cannot be serious.”

Lily tightened her arms around his neck.

Daniel turned toward his wife.

“I have never been more serious.”

Vanessa stepped in front of him as he started toward the house.

“You are making a scene without hearing my side.

Lily took Noah from the nursery after I told her to leave him alone.

She has been jealous since he was born.

She wanted to frighten me.”

Lily said nothing.

Daniel felt her trembling.

Vanessa reached for Noah.

“Give me my son.”

Daniel moved the baby beyond her grasp.

“He is my son too.” His eyes shifted to Lily.

“And she is my daughter.”

For years, Daniel had negotiated billion-dollar contracts without showing uncertainty.

He had sat across from hostile boards, government regulators, and executives who believed money made them untouchable.

None of them had ever frightened him as much as the silence of the child in his arms.

Lily had tried to tell him before.

Not directly.

Never in words strong enough to break through his schedule and Vanessa’s explanations.

She had asked whether she could come to his office after school.

She had begun hiding food in her bedroom.

She had stopped drawing people with faces.

Once, during a video call from Singapore, she had asked why some adults acted nice only when cameras were on.

Daniel had told himself she was grieving her mother.

Vanessa had told him Lily was resisting discipline.

He had accepted the easier answer.

Inside the mansion, Marcus cleared the breakfast room while Daniel carried the children toward the fire.

The charity broadcast still glowed on a laptop beside towers of white roses.

Vanessa’s frozen image filled the screen beneath the words EVERY CHILD DESERVES SAFETY.

Marcus closed it.

Dr.

Patel arrived within fifteen minutes.

She examined Noah first, checking his temperature and breathing while Daniel held Lily beneath two blankets.

“He is dehydrated and overheated from crying, but his lungs
