The first page inside Reid Callahan’s security folder carried Nolan Mercer’s employee photograph.

Brooke stared at it while passengers remained frozen in their seats, watching two airport security officers move down the aisle.

Beneath Nolan’s picture were six company names, a web of transaction numbers, and a red evidence stamp marked for restricted review.

Her own name appeared on the second page.

Brooke’s grip tightened around her daughter.

“I don’t understand.”

Reid closed the folder before anyone else could see more.

“Neither do I yet.

That’s why you need to come with me.”

Nolan was still on Brooke’s phone.

His breathing had changed after hearing Reid’s name, but his arrogance returned quickly.

“Brooke, whatever this man told you, hang up.

You don’t know who you’re dealing with.”

Reid raised the phone.

“Actually, Mr.

Mercer, that appears to be your problem.”

He ended the call.

The officers escorted Reid, Brooke, and Lily through a service corridor instead of the crowded terminal.

A woman in a navy suit met them behind an unmarked door.

She introduced herself as Lena Ortiz, an attorney retained by Reid’s firm.

No one treated Brooke like a hysterical wife.

No one interrupted her or asked what she had done to make Nolan angry.

Lena found a quiet room, brought water and crackers for Lily, and placed a legal pad on the table.

“Start with the locks,” she said.

“Tell us everything in order.”

Brooke described returning from the pharmacy and finding her key useless.

She described Nolan watching through the window, the curtain closing, and the police officer who called the situation a domestic disagreement because Nolan claimed she had moved out voluntarily.

She showed them the text about having no money for a lawyer.

Then she opened the bank application and displayed the transfers that had reduced their account to $12.43.

Reid focused on the largest payment.

“North Vale Holdings,” he said.

“Forty-two thousand dollars.”

Brooke nodded.

“I assumed it was an account he controlled.”

“He doesn’t control it directly.

North Vale is registered through three layers of companies.

On paper, it owns vacant land in Nevada.

In reality, we believe it has been receiving money from fraudulent property loans.”

Brooke looked from Reid to Lena.

“Who are you?”

Reid sat across from her.

“I founded Callahan Asset Integrity.

We conduct forensic investigations for banks, insurers, and federal agencies.

For eleven months, my team has been tracing funds stolen from a residential development group called Arden Residential.”

Brooke knew the name.

Nolan was Arden’s regional finance manager.

Reid continued.

“I’m scheduled to testify before a federal grand jury.

The people watching me on the plane were reporters, corporate investigators, and possibly someone connected to the targets of that investigation.

Security met me because my office received a threat this morning.”

The ordinary jacket and quiet manner had hidden a man whose testimony could dismantle an entire financial network.

Brooke glanced at Lily, who was chewing the wing of Reid’s folded napkin bird.

“Why is my name in your folder?”

Reid reopened it and turned to a transaction summary.

Three loans had been approved using digital authorizations attributed to Brooke Ellery Mercer.
