It requested temporary possession of our home for Ethan and emergency custody of Chloe.
Attached to it were statements from Judith claiming I had frightened Chloe with repeated accusations about an intruder.
They had planned the narrative before I ever installed the camera.
Ethan folded his arms.
“You are proving our point by reacting like this.”
I looked at the security camera application still open on my phone.
“You carried a child into Chloe’s bed at two in the morning.”
“She was scared.”
“You told Chloe the child did not exist.”
“I was controlling the situation.”
“You were making our daughter question her sanity.”
His jaw tightened.
Judith stepped closer.
“This family needs stability.
Not courtroom theatrics.”
I almost laughed.
She was carrying a legal petition designed to remove me from my home while accusing me of theatrics.
Then I saw the final attachment.
It was a fertility clinic consent form authorizing the transfer of one frozen embryo.
My name appeared beneath a signature that resembled mine.
The date was eight years earlier, three days after the clinic had confirmed that our remaining embryo was still in storage.
I looked at Ethan.
“What did you do?”
He glanced toward the den.
“You made it clear you only wanted one child.”
“That is not an answer.”
“I wanted another.”
“So you had a child with Kendra Hart?”
His silence changed the air in the room.
Kendra had worked with Ethan at a financial consulting company when Chloe was a baby.
He had called her a close friend.
She had left Portland abruptly after what Ethan described as a difficult breakup.
I had never met her.
Judith spoke first.
“Kendra could not conceive on her own.”
My fingers tightened around the clinic form.
“Why is my signature on this?”
Ethan looked directly at me.
“You would have refused.”
The answer was so calm that it took me a moment to understand its enormity.
“You used our embryo.”
“I gave it a chance to become a child.”
“You forged my consent and gave our embryo to your mistress.”
His face flushed.
“Do not say that in front of Lily.”
“You brought Lily into this house and hid her underground.”
“Kendra died six weeks ago.
Lily had nowhere else to go.”
“She had a father who should have told the truth.”
“I was preparing you.”
“By putting her in Chloe’s bed?”
“They needed to bond.”
The cruelty of that sentence silenced me.
Ethan had treated both girls as pieces he could move into place while he prepared to remove me from the board.
My phone rang.
