STORY PART 2 — His Daughter Pointed Downstairs and Said, “Mom Lives There”

4.9Editorial score

Do you really think she is capable of telling you the truth?”

Laura reached the hallway and straightened as much as she could.

“Physical weakness is not the same as confusion.

You know that.

My doctors told you that eight months ago.”

Eight months.

The same date printed on the hospital bracelet I had found.

Daniel turned toward the kitchen, but I moved between him and the back door.

“Open the front door.”

“This is my house.”

Laura gave a humorless laugh.

“No, Daniel.

It is mine.”

The words stopped him.

I unlocked the front door.

Two officers stood on the porch.

My sister Nina was behind them in sweatpants and a coat thrown over her pajamas.

Our neighbor Mrs.

Alvarez hovered near the walkway, clutching her phone.

The first officer looked from my face to Daniel’s.

“We received a report that someone may be held inside the residence.”

Daniel immediately changed his voice.

He became the grieving husband again: patient, exhausted, burdened by circumstances no one else could understand.

“There has been a misunderstanding,” he said.

“My former wife suffered a traumatic brain injury.

She becomes paranoid and occasionally violent.

I am her legal guardian.”

Laura held out her wrists.

There were no chains or dramatic wounds, only pale pressure marks from a medical identification band and the trembling of someone who had been isolated too long.

“Ask him why the basement locks from the outside,” she said.

The officer glanced at his partner.

Daniel replied instantly.

“For the children’s safety.

Laura wanders.”

“Then why did you tell Maya I was dead?” Laura asked.

He did not answer.

I removed my phone from my pocket and stopped the recording.

“I have everything he said after I opened the door.”

Then Laura placed a small USB drive in the officer’s hand.

“There is more on this.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“That was taken from my private computer.”

The officer raised one palm.

“Stay where you are.”

Laura explained that Daniel had placed an old laptop in the basement after deciding it was broken.

It still worked if the charging cable was held at an angle.

Months earlier, Grace had brought down a tablet during one of her secret visits.

Laura used it to learn how to access the house’s security system.

Daniel had installed cameras in nearly every room.

He believed they protected him.

Instead, they had recorded him carrying meals downstairs, unlocking the door, threatening Laura, and discussing her accounts on the phone.

Laura had copied as much footage as she could onto the USB drive.

“She is fabricating this,” Daniel said.

“She has always been manipulative.”

Emily wiped her eyes with her sleeve.
