her eyes on her husband.

“You asked me to,” she continued.

“I refused.”

Daniel’s face hardened.

“You don’t remember what you signed.”

“I remember everything I signed.”

Jake removed a forensic report from the case.

“And we know what she didn’t sign.”

He placed the report on the counter.

The first page displayed a total in bold type: $286,400.

Emily had known the number before that morning, but seeing it still tightened her chest.

The money had come from accounts funded by her father’s estate.

Some of it was meant for the baby.

Some was reserved for taxes and repairs on the house.

Nearly all of it had been transferred during the previous eight months through a series of forged authorization forms.

The funds moved first into a consulting company Daniel created, then into four smaller accounts.

The final account belonged to a business registered by Vanessa’s mother.

Vanessa’s eyes fixed on the report.

“That could be anything,” she said.

Jake turned to the page containing the signature analysis.

“It’s wire fraud, forgery and conspiracy.”

Daniel pointed at Emily.

“She gave me permission.

She forgets things.

That’s what I’ve been trying to explain.”

“No,” Emily said again.

This time her voice was stronger.

For months, Daniel had moved small objects and insisted she misplaced them.

He changed appointments on their shared calendar and accused her of forgetting.

He hid her car keys, then found them in places she had already checked.

When she questioned missing money, he said pregnancy had made her confused.

Emily had begun recording dates.

Then she started recording conversations.

The older officer noticed the camera above the pantry door.

“Does that work?”

Daniel answered immediately.

“No.

It’s disconnected.”

Emily reached for her phone with her uninjured hand.

“It uploads to a secure account.”

Vanessa took one step toward her.

The younger officer blocked her path.

“Stay back.”

“I wasn’t doing anything.”

“Then staying still shouldn’t be difficult.”

Emily unlocked her phone.

Daniel watched each movement.

Earlier, when he had grabbed her wrist and Vanessa had whispered, Take her phone, Emily had seen fear strip away his performance.

Now that same fear returned.

“You don’t need to play anything,” he said.

“Emily needs medical care.

We should focus on the baby.”

The concern arrived too late.

Emily connected her phone to the television mounted across the kitchen.

The screen went black, then displayed the camera archive.

She selected the most recent file.

The recording began twenty minutes before she entered the house.

Vanessa appeared first, carrying the cream robe over one arm.

Daniel followed her into the kitchen and poured two drinks.

They kissed beside the island.

No one spoke as the video played.

On-screen, Vanessa opened Emily’s prenatal folder and flipped through the papers.

“She has another appointment Friday,” Vanessa said in the recording.

Daniel checked his phone.

“I know.”

“You said she’d be out before the baby came.”

“I’m working on it.”

“You’ve been working on it for months.”

Daniel lowered his voice, but the camera’s microphone captured every word.

“The doctor already thinks she’s anxious.

Once I show them the messages and tell them she threatened you, they’ll document it.

After the birth, I ask for an emergency evaluation.

She stays somewhere for a few days, I take control of the accounts and we
