in a room with a recording device.”

The video resumed.

On-screen, Theresa stood beside the desk with a glass of wine.

Her pearls caught the lamplight.

“What happens if Valerie finds out her father put Rosewood in trust for her?” she asked.

Rachel placed the deed into a blue folder.

“She won’t find out until the transfer is finished.

The county accepted the waiver years ago.

Logan’s family company clears the liens, we sell to the resort group, and the money disappears into the holding company.”

“And Logan?”

Rachel laughed.

“Logan thinks I love him.

He isn’t a husband.

He’s a key with a famous last name.”

The recording ended.

The projector returned to a blank screen.

Rachel’s hand slipped from Logan’s sleeve.

Several guests looked away from her.

Others did not bother hiding their phones now.

Theresa lifted her chin.

“A private joke does not prove anything.”

Logan stared at Rachel.

“Was the property package you gave me this morning based on a forged waiver?”

“No.”

“Did you represent that Theresa owned Rosewood free of any beneficial interest?”

“Yes, because she does.”

“Then why did my title team find an unreleased trust notice tied to Valerie’s Social Security number?”

Rachel blinked.

That single reaction answered him.

Logan had looked exhausted when he entered the pavilion because his office had been investigating the title since dawn.

Rachel had told him the discrepancy was an old clerical error.

She insisted they could sign the final papers after the ceremony and correct the record later.

He had not signed.

He took out his phone and called someone.

“Nora, bring the blue diligence folder from my car.

Do not give it to Rachel or Theresa.

Bring it directly to me.”

Rachel’s face hardened.

“You’re humiliating me at my own wedding.”

Logan looked around the pavilion.

“There is no wedding until I know whether you tried to use my family’s company to steal this property.”

The words struck harder than any shout.

Rachel turned toward me.

“This is what you wanted, isn’t it? You came here dressed like a charity case so everyone would pity you, and now your daughter destroys my life.”

I looked at Chloe, still standing behind the DJ with tears on her cheeks.

“You called her useless,” I said.

“She may be the only person here who told the truth.”

A few guests lowered their eyes.

Theresa reached for my arm.

“Valerie, we can settle this as a family.”

I stepped back.

“You said I was not part of the family photographs.”

Her hand fell.

Before she could respond, an older woman entered the pavilion carrying a worn leather case.

She wore a charcoal suit and walked with the controlled urgency of someone who had already decided that ceremony and appearances no longer mattered.

She stopped when she saw me.

“Valerie Hale?”

I nodded.

“My name is Evelyn Shaw.

I represented your father.”

Theresa went completely still.

Evelyn noticed her reaction.

“That confirms I came to the correct place,” she said.

Rachel moved in front of her.

“This is a private event.”

Evelyn held up a sealed envelope.

“It stopped being private when someone attempted to transfer trust property using documents connected to my former client.”

Logan introduced himself and explained what his title team had found.

Evelyn opened her
