STORY PART 2 — My Husband’s Secret Baby Was Funded With My Forged Signature

His coffee mug waited in the sink.

A framed photograph from our fifth anniversary stood on the mantel, showing his arm around my waist and my face turned toward him with complete trust.

I took nothing down.

Instead, I entered my office and began collecting documents.

The consulting agreement between my company and Graham’s firm was stored in a locked cabinet.

It identified Graham as managing director of a business called Westbridge Strategic Partners.

The invoices Owen had traced, however, had been paid to an entity named Westbridge Advisory Group.

The names were close enough that an overworked employee might not notice.

Celeste was listed as the second company’s beneficial owner.

The bank routing information had changed eleven months earlier.

Three weeks after Celeste told me she was pregnant.

Two weeks after Graham persuaded me to let him submit invoices directly because, as he put it, my finance department was “making family feel like strangers.”

I had overruled the department’s normal vendor verification process for him.

He had not bypassed my controls.

I had opened the gate myself.

At 8:40 that evening, Graham came home.

I heard his key turn and forced myself to remain seated at the kitchen island.

The blue blanket lay inside its gift bag near my feet.

He walked in carrying the smell of hospital disinfectant and expensive cologne.

“There you are,” he said.

“What happened to you?”

“I felt sick.”

He loosened his tie and studied me.

“You could have told us.

Celeste cried when you disappeared.”

The lie arrived without effort.

“How is the baby?” I asked.

His face softened before he could stop it.

“He’s perfect.”

Then his expression tightened.

“For Celeste,” he added.

I lowered my eyes toward the counter so he would mistake control for weakness.

“Did she say who the father is?”

A silence passed between us.

Graham opened the refrigerator.

“Apparently some guy she dated briefly.

He wants nothing to do with them.”

“That’s terrible.”

“It is.

Which is why she needs family, not whatever performance you pulled today.”

He removed a bottle of water and closed the refrigerator with more force than necessary.

“You embarrass people when you make everything about your feelings, Adeline.”

I thought of him kissing my sister while his ring touched their son’s bassinet.

“I’m sorry,” I said.

The apology relaxed him.

He came closer and placed a hand on my shoulder.

“I knew you’d understand.

Tomorrow, send Celeste enough to cover another three months of rent.

She shouldn’t have to worry about money with a newborn.”

“Of course.”

“And approve my transfer request tonight.

Payroll is due.”

“I’ll look at it in the morning.”

His hand tightened slightly.

“There’s nothing to look at.
