Her mouth opened, but no sound came out.

Dad moved beside her and placed one arm around her shoulders.

“You planned to remove us before Friday?” he asked.

Julia began crying again.

“No one was removing you.

We found an apartment nearby.”

“You found us an apartment?” Mom whispered.

“A senior community,” Julia said.

“It has staff.

Activities.

You would have liked it.”

Melissa asked, “Did your parents tour this community?”

Julia wiped her cheeks.

“Not yet.”

“Did they apply?”

“I was going to help them.”

“Did they consent to leaving this house?”

Julia said nothing.

Kyle stepped in front of her.

“This has gotten out of control.

We saw an opportunity and made a plan.

Thomas spends money like he gets to control the whole family.

We were trying to build something for our children.”

He gestured toward the stairs, where my niece and nephew stood watching.

I hated that he had brought them into it.

They were children.

They had been told they were moving to a beach house, and they had believed their parents.

“Take the kids outside,” I told Julia.

“They do not need to hear this.”

For the first time that afternoon, she listened without arguing.

She gathered them near the front door, but the electronic lock remained engaged.

I unlocked it from my phone.

She paused before stepping onto the porch.

“Thomas,” she said quietly, “please do not destroy my family over a misunderstanding.”

Dad answered before I could.

“You tried to take our home while we were standing inside it.”

Julia flinched and led the children outside.

Kyle remained behind.

He insisted that the boxes belonged to his family, that the keypad had been installed as an improvement, and that he had never threatened my parents.

He said the forged signatures were probably digital errors.

He claimed the rental listing had been created only to test market demand.

Then Melissa asked me to open the entryway camera footage.

The green light above the door had recorded everything.

We watched Kyle arrive that morning carrying the replacement keypad.

Julia used a key taken from my mother’s purse.

Once inside, they began moving my parents’ belongings into the downstairs room.

At 10:02, Dad entered the hallway and asked what they were doing.

Kyle’s recorded voice filled the living room.

“You two had your turn.

We need this place more than you do.”

At 10:17, Mom tried to retrieve her purse.

Julia removed her mother’s driver’s license, photographed it beside several forms, and returned it.

At 10:31, Kyle stood over my father and said, “You can leave calmly, or we can tell people you are confused and make it official.”

The real Kyle watched the recording with his jaw clenched.

When it ended, Sergeant Ruiz asked him whether he still considered the situation a misunderstanding.
