Sarah replied.
“Your attorneys can challenge the procedure.
They cannot change the result.”
Julian snatched the first report.
He read the page once, then again.
The color drained from his face.
A probability of paternity greater than 99.99 percent appeared beside Adrian’s name for each child.
Liam.
Leo.
Luke.
All three.
Julian looked at Khloe.
“How long?”
She backed away from him.
“Julian, listen to me.”
“How long?”
Luke began to cry in the bassinet.
The sound cut through the room, small and frightened.
I moved toward him instinctively, but Khloe reached him first.
She lifted the baby against her chest and held him too tightly.
Adrian stood.
“This meeting is over.”
The senior trustee, Malcolm Price, remained seated.
“No, Mr.
Vance.
It has just become a formal fraud inquiry.”
Adrian’s composure finally cracked.
“These are private family matters.”
“You attempted to transfer forty-two million dollars in corporate shares to children whose paternity was falsely represented,” Malcolm said.
“You serve as chief financial officer of the company administering those assets.
That is not private.”
Julian crossed the space between himself and Adrian.
“You knew?” he asked.
Adrian did not answer.
Julian grabbed the front of his brother’s jacket.
Two security officers moved into the room before the confrontation became physical.
Sarah had arranged for them to wait outside because, as she had told me earlier, rich men often treated consequences as an invitation to damage furniture.
“Take your hands off him,” Eleanor said.
Julian stared at his mother in disbelief.
“He slept with Khloe.
He let me raise his children as mine.”
Eleanor’s gaze stayed fixed on Adrian.
“You will explain,” she said.
Khloe sank into a chair with Luke against her shoulder.
“It started before Liam,” she whispered.
Julian turned toward her.
She flinched.
“Adrian and I were together before you ever noticed me,” she continued.
“He said his position in the family would never be secure.
You were the heir.
You had the voting shares.
You had the public profile.
Everything went through you.”
Adrian’s face hardened.
“Stop talking.”
Khloe looked at him with sudden fury.
“You told me this would protect us.”
The room shifted again.
This was no longer merely an affair hidden beneath expensive clothing.
It was a plan.
Sarah leaned forward.
“Protect you how?”
Khloe looked down at the baby.
“When I became pregnant, Adrian said Eleanor would never accept a child connected to him and an employee.
But if Julian believed the baby was his, the child would become a direct heir.”
Julian stared at her as though he no longer recognized the language she was speaking.
“You chose me because I was useful?”
Khloe’s eyes filled, but I could not tell whether the tears came from remorse or fear.
“You were already unhappy with Elena.
Adrian said you wanted a son more than you wanted the truth.”
That sentence wounded Julian more deeply than the DNA report.
Because it was true.
He had wanted evidence of his own power.
Khloe had offered it, and he had never asked a question that might threaten the answer.
Eleanor stood and slapped Khloe.
The sound made Luke cry harder.
“Do not touch her again,” I said.
Everyone looked at me.
Eleanor’s hand remained raised.
“She used this family,” she said.
“And you used those children
