STORY PART 2 — The Mafia Boss Knew My Baby’s Father’s Real Name

4.9Editorial score

When the nurse returned, I asked her to replace the bracelet with my surname, Bennett.

Anthony stepped away while she printed it.

The new band read GRACE BENNETT.

I had chosen Grace months earlier because I wanted my daughter’s name to mean something gentler than the circumstances of her birth.

Anthony watched the nurse secure it around her ankle.

“Grace,” he said quietly.

“That’s a strong name.”

“It’s hers,” I replied.

“Yes.”

The single word sounded like a promise that he would not challenge me again.

Ryan laughed bitterly through the phone.

“This is ridiculous.

You don’t even know whether she’s mine.”

The hospital room door opened once more.

A gray-haired man carrying a leather briefcase entered with a younger woman in a navy suit.

Anthony introduced them as Daniel Ward, his attorney, and Priya Shah, an independent family-law attorney.

“Ms.

Shah does not work for me,” he added.

“She came because you need someone whose loyalty is only to you.

You may speak to her or ask her to leave.”

Priya handed me a business card instead of approaching my bed.

“I can explain your options,” she said.

“Nothing will be filed without your permission.”

I looked at Anthony.

“How did all of this happen so quickly?”

His answer was simple.

“When your text mentioned Ryan, I made calls on the way here.”

The efficiency of it frightened me, but it also revealed something Ryan had never understood.

Anthony’s power was not loud.

It moved through locked records, lawyers, hospital administrators, and people who answered on the first ring.

Daniel placed another envelope on the table.

“Ryan contacted the hospital forty minutes ago,” he said.

“He claimed to be the father and asked that his name be removed from all records.

He also requested information about the child’s condition without authorization.

The call was recorded under hospital policy.”

Ryan began shouting.

“I never admitted anything.

I said I might be the father.”

Daniel opened a tablet and played the recording.

Ryan’s voice filled the room.

“I’m the father, but I don’t consent to having my name on anything.

Delete my number, delete the messages, and tell her I’m not coming.”

The recording ended.

No one spoke.

Ryan had spent four months denying responsibility and less than a minute confirming it when he thought the confirmation would help him escape.

Priya broke the silence.

“A phone statement is not a substitute for genetic testing, but it can support a petition.

The court can order a DNA test, establish paternity, calculate support, and address medical expenses.”

“I don’t want his money if it means he can take her,” I said.

“Support and custody are separate questions,” Priya explained.

“Paying support does not purchase access.

The court considers the child’s welfare, each parent’s conduct, and the evidence.”

Ryan seized on the word custody.

“Fine.

File whatever you want.
