“The inventory number had been changed.”

Ward gave a short, disbelieving laugh.

“And you expect this court to believe I personally altered a police archive?”

“No,” Benson said.

“I expect the court to follow the evidence.”

She removed a photograph from the folder.

It showed Ward entering the records facility after hours.

A timestamp appeared in the corner.

Ward glanced at the image and recovered quickly.

“I had authorization.”

“For a different case,” Benson replied.

“You stayed forty-seven minutes after the evidence clerk left.

The next morning, Vale’s original statement disappeared from the active file.”

The judge ordered the courtroom doors closed.

A court officer stepped into the aisle.

Ward’s confidence hardened into anger.

“This is theater.

Captain Benson has a personal relationship with Mr.

Barba.

Her involvement compromises every piece of material she has presented.”

The accusation was carefully chosen.

Ward was no longer attacking the evidence.

She was attacking the bond that had brought Benson to the courtroom.

Barba rose.

“Leave her out of this.”

It was the first flash of the man everyone remembered—the advocate who could turn four words into a warning.

Ward smiled faintly.

“There he is.

Always ready to abandon procedure when someone you care about is involved.”

Benson placed one hand on the table between them.

“No one abandoned procedure,” she said.

“That is why Internal Affairs conducted the search.

That is why another captain secured the phone.

And that is why I did not listen to the full recording before bringing it here.”

The judge looked up.

“There is more?”

Benson nodded.

Ward’s expression changed again.

The officer resumed the audio.

Marcus Vale’s voice came through next.

He sounded frightened.

“I already gave you my statement,” he said.

“And it was not useful,” Ward replied.

“It was true.”

“Truth is not the issue.

Barba crossed a line, and everyone knows it.

Your job is to help the board understand that.”

“He did not cross the line you’re accusing him of crossing.”

A pause followed.

Then Ward’s voice became colder.

“You have a disciplinary record, Mr.

Vale.

You also have a daughter applying to the academy.

Cooperation could protect both of you from unnecessary scrutiny.”

Several people in the gallery gasped.
