Vanessa did not answer.

Adrian opened the final folder.

Everett’s trust contained an unusual descendant clause.

If Dominic had a biological child, a block of voting shares currently controlled by the executive trustees would transfer into a protected family trust for that child.

Vanessa chaired the trustee committee.

Ellie’s existence would reduce Vanessa’s control over Evans Holdings and end several financial arrangements from which she benefited.

The hidden letter was not merely inconvenient.

It threatened her power.

Vanessa looked toward the board chairman, expecting support.

He slowly moved away from her.

“Dominic,” Vanessa said, “you are allowing a homeless child to dismantle the company your father built.”

Dominic glanced at Ellie.

She had survived winter nights behind a dumpster while adults in his office debated who controlled shares that were legally hers.

“No,” he said.

“She is showing me what the company became while I wasn’t looking.”

The officers escorted Vanessa from the dining room.

She did not apologize.

As she passed Ellie, she said, “He will grow tired of this.

Men like him always do.”

Dominic started after her, but Ellie touched his sleeve.

“Mama said mean people want the last word because it’s the only thing they can still steal.”

Dominic remained beside her.

A social worker named Priya Patel arrived soon afterward.

Vanessa had contacted child services from the park and reported that Dominic was attempting to take an unidentified homeless child into his home.

Priya did not care how wealthy he was.

She asked direct questions and expected direct answers.

Ellie had been reported missing from a temporary shelter three weeks earlier.

She had run away after an older child repeatedly stole her food and threatened her at night.

The shelter had searched for her, but Ellie knew how to disappear in the alleys where she and Claire had once slept during their hardest months.

Priya knelt beside her.

“You are not in trouble.

But we need to keep you somewhere safe while we learn whether Mr.

Evans is your father.”

Ellie’s hand closed around Dominic’s sleeve.

“He said he would be my dad for one day.

The day isn’t finished.”

Priya looked at Dominic.

He did not make promises he had no legal right to make.

“Then I will stay with you for every minute they allow,” he said.

An accredited laboratory technician collected DNA samples from Dominic and Ellie that night.

Adrian requested expedited processing, but the result would still take time.

Until then, Priya approved an emergency supervised placement in the mansion’s family wing, with a licensed caregiver present.

Dominic dismissed half the household staff after discovering they had been instructed by Vanessa not to speak directly to Ellie.

He asked the remaining housekeeper, Mrs.

Alvarez, to prepare a simple bedroom rather than the enormous guest suite Vanessa had selected for appearances.

Ellie stood in the doorway and stared at the bed.

“Is all of that mine?”

“For tonight,” Dominic said.

“And tomorrow, if the people helping us say yes.”

She placed her folded cardboard beneath the bed.

Dominic noticed but did not remove it.

That night, Ellie woke screaming.

Dominic found her crouched beside the mattress with the locket clenched in her hand.

She had dreamed that workers were throwing away the bicycle again and that Claire was calling from inside the trash pile.

He sat on the floor several feet away so she would not feel trapped.
