STORY PART 3 — He Chose Maui While His Newborn Son Turned Blue

“We did not know that.”

I placed another page on the table.

“You knew by 10:18 that morning.”

It was a screenshot of the message Mrs.

Harper had sent from her phone: ETHAN IS BEING TAKEN INTO EMERGENCY SURGERY.

CALL YOUR WIFE NOW.

The message showed as delivered.

Below it was Linda’s response.

STOP FEEDING HER PANIC.

DYLAN DESERVES THIS VACATION.

Dylan read the exchange twice.

“You answered her?”

Linda’s confidence began to crack.

“I thought Claire had recruited the neighbor.

You know how persuasive she can be.”

Mrs.

Harper gave a disbelieving laugh.

“She arrived at my door barefoot and bleeding through her robe, carrying a baby who could not breathe.

She did not need to persuade me.”

Dylan looked at my feet.

The small cuts from the pavement were healing, but dark marks remained along the soles.

He reached toward me.

I stepped back.

“Do not touch me.”

His hand dropped.

Marisol asked him to sit.

He obeyed, lowering himself onto the same chair where Linda had sipped tea while Ethan’s oxygen disappeared.

“Mr.

Reed,” she said, “I need you to understand what happens next.

The protective order is temporary.

The court will review whether you can participate safely in your son’s medical care.

That determination will consider not only your departure but your refusal to seek help when directly asked.”

“I made a mistake,” he said.

“A mistake is forgetting a diaper bag,” I replied.

“You watched his lips turn blue.”

His eyes filled, but I felt no satisfaction.

I had imagined this confrontation throughout the sleepless nights in the hospital.

In those fantasies, his fear repaired something inside me.

In reality, all I could see was Ethan beneath a warming blanket, a white bandage over his chest, fighting to recover from a crisis his father had dismissed.

Linda moved toward the shopping bags as though preparing to leave.

Rachel stopped her.

“There is also the matter of the credit card.”

Linda froze.

I had reported the card stolen the morning after Ethan’s surgery.

The account history showed more than $11,000 in airfare, hotel charges, meals, spa treatments, and designer purchases.

Security footage from the kitchen showed Dylan taking the card after I questioned him.

Resort records showed Linda signing for several purchases with my name.

“Claire told Dylan he could use it,” Linda said.

“The video shows the opposite,” Rachel replied.

“She was emotional.”

“She said, ‘You are taking my money while your son cannot breathe.’ Your son answered, ‘This is why I need to get away from you.’”

Dylan stared at the floor.

Linda looked at me with open hatred.

“You recorded us without consent.”

“The camera was installed by Dylan,” I said.
