STORY PART 3 — He Rejected His Scarred Daughter—Then the Admiral Opened Her Folder

4.9Editorial score

My father looked at Graham again.

This time Graham stepped backward.

“I knew nothing about that,” my father said.

Agent Chen changed the video.

The chief engineer now sat in an interview room.

His name was Thomas Reddick.

He looked exhausted, the arrogance I remembered from company dinners replaced by fear.

“Mr.

Vale approved every substitution,” he said on the recording.

“He said military inspectors tested paperwork, not metal.

When I warned him a high-temperature system could fail, he told me failure rates were a statistics problem.”

Agent Chen paused the video.

My father laughed once.

“A fired employee telling investigators what they want to hear.”

“Mr.

Reddick was not fired,” she said.

“He entered protective custody after someone disabled the brakes on his vehicle.”

My mother’s white clutch slipped from her fingers and struck the floor.

My father turned sharply.

“Pick that up, Margaret.”

She stared at him.

He had used that tone throughout their marriage—the quiet command that carried a threat no outsider could hear.

My mother did not bend down.

Instead, she reached inside the clutch and removed a sealed envelope.

“I found this in Richard’s study three weeks ago,” she said.

Her voice trembled, but she kept speaking.

“He told me never to enter the room without permission.

After Evelyn sent me a copy of the component serial number, I remembered seeing the same number on a document he burned in the fireplace.

I searched the desk when he traveled to Washington.”

My father moved toward her.

Two agents blocked him.

“Margaret,” he said softly, “think very carefully.”

She flinched.

Then she crossed the space between us and handed the envelope to Admiral Cross.

The admiral opened it with Agent Chen watching.

Inside was a transfer authorization bearing my father’s private signature.

It directed twelve million dollars from a Vale subsidiary to a consulting company registered in the Cayman Islands.

A second page identified the consultant through an internal client code.

Admiral Cross read the name aloud.

Deputy Assistant Secretary Calvin Roane.

Roane was sitting in the third pew.

He stood so abruptly that the kneeler crashed against the bench.

An agent at the aisle intercepted him before he took two steps.

“This is absurd,” Roane shouted.

“I have never seen that document.”

My mother spoke again.

“There is another copy in Richard’s home safe.

Along with photographs of the cash transfers and a ledger listing every contract Roane approved.”

My father finally lost control.

“You stupid woman.”

His voice cracked across the cathedral.

My mother recoiled, but I stepped between them.

He looked at me with naked hatred.

“You did this,” he said.

“You turned her against me.”
