Vanessa answered.

“Because we need to settle the property issue before this marriage becomes complicated.”

Paper rustled.

Tyler said, “Sign where it’s marked.”

“No.

That condo belonged to my grandfather.”

“It belongs to your husband now.”

“That isn’t how ownership works.”

Vanessa laughed.

“It is how marriage works in this family.”

The first slap cracked through the tablet speaker.

The officer nearest Tyler turned and stared at him.

On the recording, Emily cried out.

Tyler told her to stop being dramatic.

Vanessa ordered her to sign again.

A second slap followed.

Then a third.

Vanessa began counting.

At seven, Tyler said, “You’re making this harder than it needs to be.”

At twelve, Emily begged him to unlock the door.

At nineteen, Vanessa told her that wealthy girls had to be broken of selfish habits.

At twenty-seven, Tyler said, “By sunrise, the condo is ours.”

At thirty-four, Emily screamed for help.

Someone in the hotel corridor knocked once.

Tyler raised his voice toward the door.

“Everything is fine.

My wife drank too much.”

The footsteps outside faded.

Vanessa continued counting.

When she reached forty, the recording captured Emily falling against the desk.

Nobody in my hallway moved.

Even the rain seemed quieter.

Then came the most damaging part.

Tyler bent near the recorder without knowing it was there.

“Sign,” he said, “or we’ll make sure you never leave this room.”

The senior officer stopped the playback.

Tyler lunged toward the tablet.

Michael caught his wrist before he reached it.

The movement was so fast that Tyler did not understand what had happened until he was bent against the wall with his arm pinned behind him.

Michael did not strike him.

He did not need to.

“Touch the evidence again,” Michael said quietly, “and the next recording will be of you attempting to destroy it in front of two police officers.”

The officer took control of Tyler and placed him in handcuffs.

Vanessa’s performance collapsed.

“This is absurd.

That audio could have been edited.”

“It will be examined,” the officer replied.

“I know the commissioner.”

“Then you may call him after you are advised of your rights.”

Vanessa looked toward the silver sedan as if expecting someone to rescue her.

Instead, another vehicle turned onto my street.

It was an unmarked government car.

A woman in a charcoal suit stepped out carrying a sealed envelope.

Behind her came two federal agents and a court clerk holding a metal evidence case.

Judge Eleanor Price had not come herself, but the order in the clerk’s hand bore her signature.
