STORY PART 3 — His Mistress Went Into Labor—Then My Lawyer Opened the Red Folder

4.9Editorial score

“By forging my name?”

“By preventing an unstable woman from making reckless claims against assets she did not build.”

The cruelty in her voice was quieter than Dominic’s, but older.

It had been polished over generations.

I remembered every lunch at which Vivian corrected how I spoke, every holiday where she introduced me as Dominic’s wife without using my name, every conversation in which she praised me for being adaptable after I left the career I loved.

She had never considered me family.

She had considered me an accessory with a pulse.

Harold faced her.

“Vivian, were you aware of the deed transfer?”

Her hesitation lasted less than a second, but it was enough.

Dominic saw it too.

“Mother,” he said sharply.

She lifted her chin.

“I knew the family’s attorneys were restructuring certain holdings.

I did not review signatures.”

Mara opened another section of the folder.

“That statement may become important later.”

Vivian’s composure cracked.

“Are you threatening me?”

“No,” Mara said.

“I am advising you not to volunteer explanations before you understand the records.”

Dominic’s phone began ringing again.

Kendra’s name filled the screen.

He silenced it.

Then a text appeared.

THE BABY IS HERE.

WHERE ARE YOU?

I saw it because he was standing beside me.

For one strange second, the ballroom, the investigators, and the forged deed seemed to recede.

Somewhere across the city, a child had just entered the world inside a disaster created by adults.

The baby had done nothing wrong.

I felt no anger toward him.

Only grief for the life waiting for him.

Dominic read the message and looked at me as though I had forced him to choose between the gala and the hospital.

“You planned this while she was in labor,” he said.

The accusation was so shameless that several guests reacted aloud.

I held his gaze.

“I planned to announce the divorce.

You planned the affair, the hidden company, the transfers, and the forged deed.

Her labor is the only part of tonight neither of us scheduled.”

Harold asked the foundation’s general counsel to join him near the stage.

After a brief conversation with the board members present, he returned to the microphone.

“Effective immediately, Dominic Vale is suspended from all foundation duties pending an independent audit.

All accounts requiring his authorization will be frozen tonight.”

Vivian moved toward him.

“You cannot make that decision without a formal vote.”

“Six voting directors are in this room,” Harold said.

“Five have agreed.”

The sixth director was Vivian.

Her face changed as she counted them.

Dominic had spent years building a room full of people who smiled when he entered.

He had mistaken access for loyalty.

Now, one by one, those people were protecting themselves.

An investor named Charles Wynn asked Dominic whether any Vale Meridian client funds had been transferred through Juniper Ridge.

“Of course not,” Dominic snapped.
