private areas of the property against her wishes.”

Silence.

Chloe looked at me.

“Attempted? I rattled a doorknob.”

I watched her carefully.

“Then why did your mother know there was a room next to yours before she arrived?”

No one moved.

That question had been bothering me since the moment Evelyn entered the house and announced that she would take the room beside Chloe’s.

The office door looked like every other interior door in that hallway.

From the foyer, a guest could not have known what was behind it.

Evelyn answered too quickly.

“Chloe described the layout.”

I turned to Chloe.

“Did you?”

“Of course.”

“Why?”

She gave an irritated laugh.

“Because she’s my mother.

We talk.”

I nodded.

Then I reached into the folder and removed a photograph.

It had been taken three weeks earlier by the small security camera near my office hallway.

I had installed the camera after Harold died because that side of the house had a separate exterior door.

I almost never checked the footage.

Until the locksmith asked that morning whether I had any existing security system.

I had opened the app out of habit.

And found Chloe standing outside my office late one night.

In the photograph, she was holding her phone close to the lock.

David stared at the image.

“What is that?”

Chloe went pale.

“Nothing.”

Thomas looked at her.

“It appears to be you photographing the office lock.”

“I dropped something.”

“With your phone pointed at the keyway?” I asked.

Evelyn stepped between us.

“Martha, stop this.

You’re turning your own family into criminals because someone wanted a comfortable room.”

I looked at her.

“Then why did Chloe photograph the lock three weeks before you arrived?”

Evelyn’s face tightened.

David turned to his wife.

“Chloe?”

She shoved the photograph back across the table.

“I was curious.

That’s all.

She keeps everything locked up like we’re strangers.

I wanted to know why.”

The answer hit harder than I expected.

Not because she had admitted curiosity.

Because she still believed my privacy required justification.

“You wanted to know what was inside,” I said.

“You make everything secret.”

“It is my office.”

“And we’re supposed to be family.”

“Family is not a search warrant.”

David shut his eyes.

For the first time that night, he looked ashamed.

Thomas placed another paper on the table.

“The notice remains in effect.”

Chloe laughed bitterly.

“So that’s it? After everything David has done for her?”

I felt my heart contract.

“What has David done for me?”

She opened her mouth.

Then stopped.

I waited.

David looked miserable.

Chloe recovered quickly.

“He checks on you.

He lives here so you’re not alone.

He helps with things.”

“He asked to move here because you wanted to save money.”

“That doesn’t mean he hasn’t helped.”

“Then you should have respected the woman who was helping you.”

Evelyn grabbed her handbag.

“I will not stay in a house where I’m treated like an intruder.”

I looked at her suitcases still lined against the foyer wall.

“Then the hotel is still three miles away.”

She stared at me.

For one second, I saw the shock beneath the anger.

She had expected me to soften.

That had been everyone’s mistake.

Evelyn left that evening.

Not quietly.

She dragged both suitcases back across
