order.

“This is absurd.

Elite Affairs has always supported Caldwell functions.

Those expenses are part of your role in this family.”

“My role?”

“You benefited from our name.”

“My company was profitable before I met Shawn.

Your family began delaying payments two years ago.

Over the last eight months, you stopped paying entirely.”

Uncle Robert frowned.

“That cannot be true.”

I slid a summary of unpaid invoices toward him.

He read the total twice.

“Six hundred and eighty thousand dollars?”

“That includes events, staff, international deposits, transportation, and this week in Rome.”

Miranda looked at her mother.

“You told us the family office paid Anna’s company quarterly.”

Eleanor’s silence answered her.

Shawn snatched the paper from Robert’s hands.

“These numbers are misleading.

The accounts are complicated.”

“They become simple when the cards decline,” I said.

Vanessa had not moved from the doorway.

Her confidence was fading with every sentence.

She looked at Shawn.

“You said the villa belonged to your family.”

“It practically does.”

“The manager said the reservation was in Anna’s company name.”

“That is how she arranges things.”

“You said the house in Boston was yours.”

I answered before he could.

“The Beacon Hill house is mine.

I bought it through a trust before we married.”

Vanessa’s mouth parted slightly.

Shawn turned on me.

“You are enjoying this.”

“No,” I said.

“I am finally seeing it clearly.”

Rachel called a moment later.

I placed the phone on speaker.

“Anna, are you safe?” she asked.

“Yes.”

“Good.

Shawn, since I understand you are present, consider this notice that you must preserve all electronic records related to Elite Affairs, the Caldwell investment firm, and the transfers listed in the order.

Deleting messages or moving money would violate the court’s instructions.”

Shawn stared at the phone.

“You have no right to ambush me at my mother’s birthday.”

Rachel’s voice remained calm.

“The timing was determined by the evidence, not the birthday.”

Eleanor stepped toward the phone.

“Our family attorneys will destroy this nonsense.”

“Your family attorneys received copies twenty minutes ago,” Rachel said.

“One of them has already confirmed that he does not represent Shawn regarding the suspected forged authorization.”

The word forged changed the room.

Robert leaned forward.

“What authorization?”

I displayed the document bearing the imitation of my signature.

Shawn did not look at it.

He looked at his mother.

That was the moment I understood she had known about more than the affair.

Eleanor said, “The transfer was temporary.

The money would have been restored after the development closed.”

“You knew?” Miranda whispered.

“Your brother was protecting the firm.”

“With Anna’s money?”

“With family resources,” Eleanor snapped.

“I am not a family resource,” I said.

Vanessa lowered herself into the chair meant for her, not because she was claiming it, but because her knees appeared unsteady.

She opened the messages on her phone.

“Shawn told me the investment firm had over eighty million in liquid assets,” she said.

“He said the Rome trip was being paid from a family travel account.”

Robert gave a humorless laugh.

“There hasn’t been a family travel account in three years.”

Shawn’s control finally broke.

He slammed his palm against the table.

Glasses jumped.

One tipped over, sending red wine across the white cloth.

“This is all because Anna wants revenge,” he said.
