Jenna stepped forward.
“We have permission from her son.”
Mr.
Alvarez looked at Alex.
“Are you an owner or tenant of this unit?”
Alex’s face reddened.
“No.”
“Then you cannot authorize occupancy.”
Carl tried to take control of the conversation.
He spoke slowly, as if volume and confidence could create authority.
“This is a private family misunderstanding.
We will collect our belongings and leave without further embarrassment.”
Mr.
Alvarez held out his hand.
“All keys and access devices first.”
Jenna’s brother surrendered a temporary elevator card.
Mia placed a copied key on the table.
Lorraine produced another from her handbag.
I looked at Alex.
“I gave Jenna one key,” he said.
Mr.
Alvarez turned to her.
“How many copies were made?”
Jenna crossed her arms.
“I don’t remember.”
“Then the lock will be replaced tonight.”
The security officers began escorting the family’s belongings into the hallway.
The confidence drained from them one object at a time.
Carl no longer looked like the head of a household claiming new territory.
He looked like a man watching a plan collapse under fluorescent lights.
Lorraine tried one final appeal.
“Maggie, think about the wedding.
Nearly two hundred people are coming.
Do you really want this ugliness attached to Alex’s marriage?”
I looked at my son.
His face held humiliation, anger, and something deeper: the shock of realizing that the woman he intended to marry had hidden an entire strategy behind a smile.
“I didn’t attach this to his marriage,” I said.
“You did.”
Jenna turned on Alex the moment security carried out the last suitcase.
“Say something.
You told me this apartment would be yours eventually.”
Alex stared at her.
“I said my mother once mentioned leaving it to me in her will.
That does not make it mine now.”
“You also said she would never refuse you before the wedding.”
He flinched.
That sentence wounded both of us because part of it was true.
Alex had counted on my love.
Perhaps not to the extent Jenna had, but he had still opened my door and assumed forgiveness would follow.
He had not forged my signature, yet his carelessness had given them access and confidence.
I asked Mr.
Alvarez to let Alex remain while the others were escorted downstairs.
Jenna looked at him, expecting him to follow her.
He did not.
“You’re choosing this apartment over me?” she asked.
