We all heard you.

We just stood there.”

His honesty shifted something in the room.

Blake looked up from the floor.

One of Ashley’s teenagers quietly moved away from her.

Even Thomas released the luggage cart and stepped toward his wife.

“You told me there had been a booking mistake,” he said.

Margaret’s face hardened.

“I spared you the details because you always avoid difficult decisions.”

“No,” Thomas replied.

“You lied because you knew I would not agree.”

Luke moved closer to me and took my free hand.

“We are not staying with them,” he said to Daniel.

“Whatever happens with their dinner, Claire and I will find somewhere else.”

Daniel shook his head.

“You are staying here.”

He looked toward the front desk clerk.

“Open the Bennett Suite.”

I released Luke’s hand and faced her fully.

“You brought me into a crowded lobby knowing I had nowhere to sleep.

You arranged a motel in advance.

You told my husband I was not family.

Ashley prepared to record my reaction.

None of that happened because I know Daniel.

It happened because you believed I had no power to stop you.”

Margaret’s nostrils flared.

“This family has standards.”

“Yes,” I said.

“That is the problem.”

Daniel gestured to Martin.

The attorney removed a second document from the leather folder.

“There is another matter,” Martin said.

“Mrs.

Reed’s authority became effective this morning, but the trust’s ownership has been continuous since the resort’s formation.

That ownership includes voting rights over membership in Harbor & Pine’s private patron council.”

Thomas looked sharply at Margaret.

I did not understand his reaction until Daniel continued.

“Mrs.
