I did not.

Ruth closed the folder in front of her.

“You are not being suspended because your wife is hysterical.

You are being suspended because the evidence indicates fraud, self-dealing, falsification of records, and attempted financial entrapment of the chairwoman.”

Security approached Adrian.

He backed away from them.

“I built this company with her.”

That was the first thing he said that made anger break through my calm.

“My father built this company,” I said.

“I spent twenty years learning every property, every loan, and every employee’s name.

You married me and mistook access for ownership.”

He looked at me as if he had never seen me clearly before.

Perhaps he had not.

Security escorted him from the room.

At the doorway, he turned toward Sloane.

“Come with me.”

She stayed seated.

The doors closed behind him.

No one spoke for several seconds.

Then Sloane began to cry.

They were not elegant tears.

Her shoulders shook, and mascara gathered beneath her eyes.

She pushed the bracelet toward me.

“I did not know it was yours.”

I picked it up but did not put it on.

“You knew he was married.”

She lowered her head.

“Yes.”

“You came into my home.”

“He told me you had separate rooms.

He told me the marriage was only for appearances.”

“And when you saw me in the kitchen?”

Her face tightened with shame.

“I should have left.”

“But you did not.”

“No.”

I believed that Adrian had lied to her.

I also knew she had accepted the lies because they offered her money, status, and a future she wanted.

Deception did not erase choice.

Ruth asked whether Sloane would cooperate with the investigation.

She nodded immediately.

“I have messages,” she said.

“Contracts, recordings, everything.

He told me to keep copies because he did not trust the board.”

That arrogance became the final piece of his undoing.

Over the next six weeks, investigators reconstructed the scheme.

Adrian had created shell consulting arrangements to funnel company money into accounts he controlled with Sloane.

He planned to use the Savannah expansion to generate millions in fees, then force me out before auditors could challenge the payments.

The two-million-dollar transfer was meant to frame me for theft.

His messages made the plan explicit.

In one exchange, Sloane asked what would happen if I fought back.

Adrian replied, She just lost the baby.

She can barely stand.

By the time she understands what happened, the company will be ours.

I read that message once.
