Alexander stared at her.
In that glance, Eleanor saw the alliance begin to break.
The secret that had made them feel powerful now made each of them dangerous to the other.
Alexander spoke slowly.
“Nora was responsible for her own billing.”
She turned toward him.
“You told me what amounts to submit.”
“I did no such thing.”
“You sent the descriptions.”
“Be careful.”
“No, you be careful.”
The polished intimacy disappeared.
They were no longer lovers laughing in a hotel room.
They were two frightened people standing beside a pile of evidence, each trying to decide who could be sacrificed first.
Eleanor watched without satisfaction.
She had imagined that exposing them might feel like reclaiming oxygen.
Instead, it felt like watching a house collapse after discovering the foundation had been hollow for years.
Miriam asked Alexander to surrender his company phone and laptop under the terms of the board’s preservation order.
He refused.
Helen informed him that the independent directors had met that afternoon.
Based on the compliance report, the attempted share transfer, the undisclosed related-party payments, and the unauthorized acquisition commitments, they had voted to suspend him as chief executive pending a full investigation.
Alexander looked at Eleanor as though she had struck him.
“You did this before dinner.”
“I preserved the company before dinner.”
“You planned to humiliate me.”
Eleanor almost laughed at the accusation.
That morning, he and Nora had discussed using the memory of her lost child to trick her into signing away her inheritance.
Yet he believed the humiliation began only when witnesses entered the room.
“I planned to give you one opportunity to tell the truth,” she said.
“You never asked me anything.”
“You placed the agreement in front of me and told me to trust you.”
Alexander looked toward the board.
“This is a domestic dispute.
Eleanor is emotional.”
The word settled over the table.
Emotional.
He had used it after the miscarriage when she asked where he had been.
He used it when she questioned unexplained charges.
He used it whenever her observations came too close to the truth.
Helen closed the forensic report.
“Mrs.
Vale has spoken less than anyone in this room,” she said.
“The documents are speaking for her.”
Alexander’s shoulders lowered slightly.
For the first time that evening, he seemed to understand that charm would not restore his authority.
He surrendered his phone.
Nora did the same after Miriam explained that deleting company communications after receiving a preservation notice could create additional legal consequences.
The devices were sealed in evidence bags.
The hotel director confirmed that security footage, key-card records, and billing data had been preserved.
Miriam stated that outside counsel would determine whether the forged authorization and financial transfers required referral to law enforcement.
Nothing was dramatized.
No one shouted for police.
No handcuffs appeared.
The consequences arrived in the colder language of procedure.
Suspension.
