“That accusation is precisely why Lily wrote the note,” she said.
“She predicted you would blame Claire.”
Mark looked down at the paper on the table.
Do not tell Grandma that Mom poisoned me against you.
I saw everything.
His daughter had known exactly which defense he would choose.
The realization wounded him more deeply than the detective’s presence.
Not because Lily hated him.
Because she understood him.
A soft electronic chime sounded from the hallway.
Grace turned toward it.
The old tablet, now sitting on a console table, had reconnected to the house network.
Its cracked screen glowed with a list of uploaded recordings.
Ortiz carried it into the kitchen.
The newest file was not the video of Mark emptying the bottle.
It showed Vanessa entering the bathroom three days earlier.
She wore a cream coat and carried the same white envelope Mark later used.
The camera captured her opening the medicine cabinet, photographing the prescription label, and placing the envelope behind a stack of towels.
Then she called someone.
The tablet’s microphone had recorded every word.
“I left the replacements where you said,” Vanessa whispered.
“But I’m not touching the bottle.
That part is on you.”
She listened for several seconds.
“No, Mark.
I’m not waiting another year.
The board vote happens Friday, and the properties move immediately after Claire is declared unfit.”
Mark stood so quickly that the chair struck the floor.
“That recording is incomplete.”
Ortiz paused the video.
“You recognized the conversation?”
“I said it is incomplete.”
“Then you can explain the full context with your attorney present.”
Mark stepped toward the tablet.
Ortiz moved between them.
“Do not touch it.”
“This is my property.”
“It belongs to Lily,” Grace said.
“I bought it.”
“And she used it to protect her mother.”
Mark’s phone began ringing again.
Vanessa.
Ortiz looked at the screen, then at Mark.
“She appears eager to speak with you.”
Mark’s expression hardened.
“Answer it.”
Ortiz did not move.
“Answer it,” he repeated.
“Put it on speaker.
You want evidence? Let her tell you what happened.”
After confirming that Mark understood the call would be recorded, Ortiz accepted it.
Vanessa’s voice burst through the speaker.
“Mark, where are you? The company’s counsel called me.
They froze the holding company account.”
Mark said nothing.
