the table at people who once waited for him to speak first.

“What does Isabella want?”

Helena placed a letter in front of him.

“She wants the investigation completed.

She wants all misused funds repaid.

She wants Khloe’s leaks referred to the authorities.

And she supports appointing an interim chief executive.”

Richard unfolded the letter.

At the bottom, Isabella had signed her maiden name.

Isabella Vale.

Not Sterling.

The board voted eleven to one to remove him as chief executive.

Richard cast the only opposing vote, but without the trust shares, his vote no longer controlled the outcome.

In less than ten minutes, the empire he had inherited was taken from his hands.

The company did not collapse.

That was the part that wounded his pride most deeply.

An interim executive stepped in.

Markets steadied.

Employees continued working.

Meetings happened without him.

Sterling Global had needed Isabella’s judgment.

It had never truly needed Richard’s certainty.

Two days later, Isabella’s family-law attorney contacted him.

She was prepared to meet through mediation, provided Richard agreed not to trace her location or demand her return.

They met by encrypted video.

When Isabella appeared, Richard forgot every speech he had prepared.

She looked tired but peaceful.

The room behind her was simple.

Snow rested on the window ledge.

“Are you safe?” he asked.

“Yes.”

“And the baby?”

“He is healthy.”

Richard lowered his eyes.

“I ended things with Khloe.”

Isabella’s expression did not change.

“You still think the affair was the whole wound.”

“Wasn’t it?”

“No.

It was proof.”

“Proof of what?”

“That you believed I could be humiliated, ignored, and replaced without consequence.

You did not see me as someone who could leave.”

He wanted to argue, but he remembered his own words.

You have nowhere to go.

“I was wrong.”

“Yes.”

The calmness of her answer hurt more than anger would have.

Richard asked whether she would ever come home.

Isabella looked down at her hands.

“That penthouse was your home.

I was the person keeping it warm.”

He swallowed.

“Can I see you?”

“Not yet.”

“What about when our son is born?”

“We will create a safe plan through our attorneys.

You can be his father.

But you will not use him to regain control of me.”

Richard nodded.

For once, he did not negotiate.

The investigation lasted three months.

It found that Richard had approved more than two million dollars in improper expenses connected to Khloe, including the Chelsea apartment, luxury travel, and fabricated consulting invoices.

He repaid the company and surrendered additional shares as part of a settlement.

Khloe was sued for misappropriating confidential information and referred to federal investigators over the leaked acquisition plans.

Haines Capital denied authorizing her conduct and withdrew its job offer.

The tabloids that had called Isabella unstable changed their headlines after the evidence became public.

She refused every interview request.

In early spring, she gave birth to a boy named Samuel Vale Sterling.

Richard received the news through their attorneys.

He sat alone in the penthouse nursery, surrounded by expensive furniture Isabella had chosen before she left.

Hours later, a photograph arrived.

The baby was asleep against Isabella’s chest.

Only part of her face was visible, but Richard could see that she was smiling.

He cried until the room grew dark.
