Adrian pointed at the screen.

“Turn this off.”

“No,” Leonard said.

“I am instructing you as the heir.”

“You are not the controlling heir.”

The words struck him harder the second time.

Leonard turned to me.

“Under the company’s succession agreement, Samuel’s shares transferred upon his death.

Once you sign the acknowledgment documents, you will hold the voting authority attached to them.”

I looked toward Ruth.

“What does that authority allow me to do today?”

Adrian laughed.

“You’re an architect.

You know nothing about running a corporation this size.”

Ruth answered without looking at him.

“It allows you to call an emergency board meeting, appoint an interim chair, preserve company records, and suspend senior officers pending investigation.”

Adrian’s expression changed.

Dana leaned close to me.

“You do not have to decide anything immediately.”

But some decisions had already been delayed too long.

I looked at Ruth.

“Is there a board meeting scheduled?”

“Noon.

Samuel ordered it before his death.”

“Then add a motion to preserve all financial records and suspend Adrian’s access to company systems until the audit is complete.”

Adrian struck the table with his fist.

“You cannot do this.”

I did not raise my voice.

“I just did.”

He moved toward me, but two security officers entered through the side door.

Leonard had apparently summoned them with a button beneath his desk.

They did not touch Adrian.

They merely stood between us.

That was enough.

Lillian sank into a chair.

Eleanor looked at me as if I had become a stranger while standing in the same place.

“You planned this,” she said.

“No.”

“You came here with an attorney.”

“I came with protection.”

“Against your family?”

I held her gaze.

“You spent years reminding me I wasn’t family.”

She looked away first.

Leonard reached for a second envelope.

Red letters across the front read: FOR RELEASE UPON CONTEST OR DESTRUCTION OF RECORDS.

Adrian saw it.

“What is that?”

“Samuel’s final safeguard,” Leonard replied.

“It contains the complete forensic audit, sworn witness statements, and instructions authorizing delivery to the board, the company’s lenders, and the district attorney if any beneficiary contests the will through an allegation Samuel knew to be false, or if anyone attempts to destroy relevant records.”

Adrian’s hand hovered over his phone.

Ruth spoke quietly.

“Your company access has already been frozen.”

He looked at her in disbelief.

“The succession protocol activated when Leonard opened the will,” she said.
