the sentence.

Instead, I said, “Send a list of essential belongings through Elena tomorrow.”

Then I disabled the speaker.

He stood outside for another four minutes before dragging his suitcase back toward the car that had brought him from the airport.

The next morning, Margot called me.

I almost ignored her.

Then I answered.

Her voice sounded completely different from the woman in the white dress.

“I need to ask you something.”

“You can ask.”

“Did Jasper tell you he was using money from a bonus to pay for the Vegas trip?”

“No.”

There was a pause.

“He told me he had a private account.”

I sat straighter.

Margot explained that Jasper had booked their suite, dinners, flights, and chapel package while repeatedly boasting that he had money I knew nothing about.

When the card I controlled stopped working, he tried two others.

Both were nearly maxed out.

Then he asked Margot to put the rest on hers.

“I thought he was wealthy,” she said, and immediately sounded embarrassed by her own admission.

“Jasper earns a good salary.”

“He told me the house was his.

He said you barely worked and lived off him.”

That lie was so large I had to set the phone down for a second.

I had spent most of our marriage earning more than Jasper.

Not dramatically more every year, but consistently enough that my income had funded much of the stability he liked displaying.

The renovations he called his projects had been paid from my savings.

The emergency fund was mine before the marriage and had remained separately titled.

The house had come from my grandmother.

Jasper had not built the platform beneath him.

He had simply stood on it long enough to believe it was part of his body.

“Why are you telling me this?” I asked.

Margot was quiet.

“Because he lied to me too.”

“That doesn’t make what you did to me disappear.”

“I know.”

Another pause.

“There’s something else.”

She forwarded screenshots.

Messages between her and Jasper stretched back eight months.

I did not read all of them.

I did not need to.

Several were enough.

He had described me as unstable, dependent, and obsessed with him.

He claimed I refused to accept that our marriage had ended.

He told Margot that he had delayed filing for divorce because I had threatened to take his house.

Most useful of all was a message sent three weeks before Vegas.

Once we’re married, she’ll finally understand she has no leverage.

The house is mine in everything but paperwork.

I forwarded the screenshots to Elena.

Her response came quickly.

Keep originals.

Do not edit them.

We’ll review relevance.

Then Jasper made his next mistake.

He began calling relatives, friends, and mutual acquaintances to announce that I had financially abused him by cutting off access to “our money.”

The story might have worked better if he had not simultaneously demanded that I pay the hotel balance from his trip with Margot.

He emailed the request.

Elena nearly laughed when I forwarded it.

“Do not pay his personal Vegas expenses,” she said.

Within days, the version of Jasper who had been certain I would quietly absorb his choices began to disappear.

His parents stopped calling me after Paige showed them the original text.

Two mutual
