Vanessa unclasped the wedding bracelet and placed it on the table between us.
She did not apologize.
Perhaps she was not ready.
Perhaps no apology could have reached me then.
But she stopped protecting him.
That was enough.
Marcus asked for a recess.
The judge denied it.
Then Dana requested permission to address the documents from Marcus’s briefcase.
She explained that one page appeared to be a duplicate of an unsigned affidavit already in the state’s possession.
The affidavit described me as delusional, violent, and unable to care for a child.
It had been prepared for a physician who had never treated me.
The signature line was blank.
Attached to it was an email from Marcus to Evan.
Need this executed before hearing.
Doctor wants remaining payment first.
Marcus stood so quickly that his chair rolled backward.
“That communication is privileged and taken out of context.”
The judge’s expression hardened.
“Does the context involve purchasing false medical testimony?”
“No, Your Honor.”
“Then explain the phrase ‘remaining payment.’”
Marcus looked at the page, then at Evan.
Evan said, “I have never seen that email.”
Dana produced an authentication report.
“It came from your corporate server.
Your assistant preserved the mailbox after receiving an instruction to delete the custody file.”
Evan’s face tightened.
“Which assistant?”
The courtroom doors opened again.
A young man entered with an attorney.
His name was Noah Grant, Evan’s executive assistant.
For two years, Noah had scheduled Evan’s meetings, carried Claudia’s packages, and apologized whenever Evan kept staff at the office past midnight.
He avoided Evan’s eyes as he took the witness chair.
Under oath, Noah explained that Evan had ordered him to create a private digital folder labeled Project Nursery.
The folder contained financial transfers, draft custody filings, photographs of me leaving therapy appointments, and messages between Evan and Marcus.
“Why did you preserve it?” Dana asked.
Noah swallowed.
“Because Mr.
Reed told me to delete it the morning Mrs.
Reed went into labor.”
“Did he say why?”
“He said the court only needed the final story.”
Evan rose.
“He stole confidential company records.”
The judge ordered him to sit.
Noah continued.
“There was also a recording from a boardroom meeting.”
My stomach tightened.
I had not known about a boardroom recording.
Dana asked the clerk to play it.
Evan’s voice came through the speakers first.
Once I have custody, the trust is protected.
Lily gets labeled unstable, the divorce court gives her supervised visits, and Vanessa signs whatever I put in front of her.
Then Marcus spoke.
