need.

The bank preserved that email.”

Derek turned toward my mother.

“You attached that?”

“We needed a convincing reason for the loan,” she replied.

“You put my name on a bank file?”

“You signed the form.”

“For the hospital, not for a lender.”

Their alliance began breaking in front of me.

Jenna looked from one to the other.

“You said the money was for a house for us.”

My mother’s silence answered her.

Derek snatched the loan application and scanned the requested amount.

“Two hundred and fifty thousand? You told me we were applying for one hundred.”

My mother’s face hardened.

“Someone had to plan for everyone.”

“Everyone?” Jenna asked.

“Where was the rest going?”

Mara pulled out a final bank summary.

A draft disbursement schedule had directed one hundred thousand dollars to an account controlled by my mother.

Sixty thousand was marked for Derek’s business debts.

The remaining amount was intended for Jenna’s apartment, legal fees, and expenses.

My mother had not simply helped Derek and Jenna betray me.

She had planned to profit from it.

Jenna stared at her.

“You said you were protecting me.”

“I was,” my mother insisted.

“Do you think babies are free? Do you think men stay without pressure? I was creating security.”

Derek gave a bitter laugh.

“For yourself.”

The baby stirred, startled by his voice.

Jenna rose and carried him into the living room.

She stood near the window, rocking him while tears moved silently down her face.

I felt no satisfaction watching her fall apart.

Only exhaustion.

Mara gathered the originals and returned them to her briefcase.

“The bank’s fraud department is reviewing the application,” she said.

“My client has not yet decided how she will proceed regarding the attempted signature and misrepresentation of ownership.

You should each obtain independent counsel.”

My mother looked at me.

“You would report your own mother?”

“You tried to borrow against Dad’s house using my name.”

“For your family.”

“Against me.”

Derek walked toward the hallway.

“I’m getting my things.”

“A bag has already been packed,” I said.

“It’s in the guest room.

You may take your clothes and personal items tonight.

Anything disputed will be inventoried through the attorneys.”

He turned slowly.

“You planned all this in three days?”

“You planned your life with Jenna for more than a year.”

He stared at me as though seeing me for the first time.

For most of our marriage, my calm had made him feel powerful.

He had mistaken patience for dependence and generosity for blindness.

Now the same calm frightened him.

He went upstairs without another word.

My mother followed, still arguing that I was destroying the family.

Mara stopped her at the foot of the stairs and reminded her that she was a guest in my home.

Jenna remained by the window.

After several minutes, she said, “I am sorry.”

I looked at the child sleeping against her chest.

“Are you sorry I found out?”

She lowered her eyes.

That was answer enough.

She admitted the affair had begun eighteen months earlier, after Derek drove her home from a family dinner.

At first, they met when I was at work.

Later, my mother helped create excuses.

When Jenna became pregnant, they decided Derek would remain married to me until they could secure enough money
