“Give me the emergency key,” he said.

“I don’t have it with me.”

Karen held up the entryway recording from that afternoon.

It showed Linda locking the front door and dropping the key into the small side pocket of her purse.

“Left pocket,” Karen said.

Linda’s hand moved instinctively toward the purse.

Eric looked away.

Paula whispered, “Just give it back.”

Linda slowly removed the key and slapped it into Mark’s open palm.

“You are choosing her over your own mother.”

Mark closed his fingers around the key.

“I am choosing my marriage over someone who entered our bedroom without permission and then lied about it.”

Linda’s eyes filled with tears, but Karen no longer mistook tears for accountability.

“You will regret this,” Linda said.

Mark closed the door.

They watched through the glass as Linda marched toward her car.

Paula and Eric followed several steps behind.

Before getting in, Paula paused and looked back at Karen with an expression that held embarrassment, apology, and relief.

Inside, the house became quiet.

Mark placed the copied key on the table as though it were contaminated.

Then he looked at Karen.

“I’m sorry.”

She did not rescue him from the discomfort.

“For which part?”

He swallowed.

“For telling you that you were stressed.

For making you prove what you already knew.

For letting my mother believe she had more authority in this house than you did.”

Karen leaned against the wall.

The anger she had contained for weeks pressed against her ribs, but beneath it was exhaustion.

“You said it gently,” she told him.

“That didn’t make it less dismissive.”

“I know.”

“I started writing down missing food because I was afraid I couldn’t trust my own memory.

I installed cameras because my husband trusted the easiest explanation instead of me.”

Mark lowered his head.

“I don’t have a defense.”

That was the first useful thing he said.

They did not solve everything that night.

Mark deleted Linda’s alarm code while Karen watched.

The next morning, a locksmith replaced the exterior cylinders because Linda might have made additional copies.

Mark paid for the work and stayed home until it was finished.

They washed the bedding, not because Linda had made it physically dirty, but because Karen needed the room to feel like hers again.

Mark replaced the throw blanket without being asked.

Linda began calling before breakfast.

When Mark did not answer, she sent messages accusing Karen of isolating him.

She told relatives that Karen had planted dangerous animals in the house, recorded her in private, and thrown her into the street.

Karen refused to release the bedroom footage.

She would not use humiliation as entertainment, even after Linda had invaded her most private space.

Instead, she created a one-page timeline listing the nine unauthorized entries, the copied keys, the alarm records, and the office search.

Mark sent it to the relatives Linda had contacted, along with a single twenty-second clip showing Linda entering the house, disabling the alarm, and stepping into Karen’s slippers.

The family messages stopped within an hour.

Paula called Mark privately and admitted that Linda had spoken about using the pool several times.

Paula had assumed Mark knew because Linda always said, “My son doesn’t mind.”

Mark asked why she had never checked.

Paula had no good answer.
