She closed the distance before he could establish his reach, forced him to turn, and touched his vest with two quick scoring strikes.
Mason swung wildly.
Emily slipped away.
He followed, exactly as she expected.
She led him toward the center, where he had more room to accelerate and less awareness of the referee behind him.
He attacked with the same right shoulder signal.
Emily caught the arm, turned beneath it, and locked it against her body.
Mason tried to wrench free using raw strength.
That was the mistake.
The harder he pulled, the more unstable his stance became.
Emily swept his leg and guided him to the mat, maintaining control of his wrist and shoulder.
The referee dropped beside them.
“Caldwell, defend intelligently.”
Mason’s face pressed against the mat.
He could have yielded and reset.
Instead, he tried to stand while Emily still controlled his arm.
She adjusted without forcing the joint beyond the safe limit.
“Stop fighting the position,” she said quietly.
“You think you beat me?”
“No.
I think you beat yourself before the bell rang.”
Mason roared and twisted.
The movement tightened the hold.
The referee warned him again.
For a moment, Emily thought he would finally submit.
His free hand lifted from the mat.
Then the round-ending bell sounded.
Emily immediately released him and stepped back.
Mason did not.
He surged to his feet and struck her from behind.
The blow caught the upper edge of her shoulder and sent her to one knee.
The compound exploded with shouts.
The referee seized Mason around the chest.
Two additional officials entered the ring as Mason tried to push through them.
“She didn’t release!” he yelled.
The overhead replay appeared on the screen without anyone requesting it.
It showed Emily releasing him at the bell.
It showed Mason taking two steps after the separation.
It showed the strike landing after the round had ended.
There was no angle from which it looked accidental.
Colonel Hayes stood.
“End the exhibition.”
Mason stopped struggling.
“No.”
The referee removed his hands and stepped away.
“Sergeant Mason Caldwell is disqualified for an intentional strike after the bell and failure to obey safety commands.”
Mason looked around the compound.
He had spent years teaching soldiers to associate intimidation with leadership.
Now those same soldiers watched as military police approached the ring.
No one applauded him.
No one defended him.
Emily rose slowly.
The medical officer entered and examined her shoulder.
It hurt, but the joint was stable.
Mason pointed at her one last time.
