STORY PART 5 — He Mocked His Ex at His Wedding—Then Their Son Opened the Truth

4.9Editorial score

“I asked her because I thought maybe Dad would be nice if other people were watching.”

Several guests looked away.

That sentence did more damage to Ethan than any accusation I could have made.

Daniel asked Rebecca about the video file labeled SIGNATURE.

She hesitated.

“The court has a copy.

Public playback is not necessary.”

Ethan seized on her caution.

“Because it’s fake.”

I looked at Rebecca.

She gave me a small nod.

The file involved my own signature and my own loan application.

I had the right to show it.

I pressed play.

The ballroom screen displayed the date and time from the old phone.

The camera angle showed Ethan seated at the desk in our former home office.

A home-equity loan form lay in front of him.

My printed name appeared on the signature line.

In the video, Ethan practiced my signature twice on a yellow legal pad.

Then he signed the application.

Robert’s voice came through the phone speaker.

“She said no?”

Ethan answered, “She’ll never know unless the deal fails.”

The video ended.

No music returned to fill the silence.

Ethan stared at the blank screen.

I remembered the week that video had been recorded.

Noah had pneumonia.

I had slept on the floor beside his bed because his fever kept climbing.

Ethan had told me he was working late to protect our finances.

In reality, he had been borrowing against our home without my consent.

My anger had burned hot for months.

In that ballroom, it became something colder and cleaner.

Rebecca closed the folder.

“The lender confirmed that the application was submitted but flagged before funding because the electronic verification failed.

No loan proceeds were released.

The alleged forgery remains under investigation.”

Ethan looked at me.

“You already knew the loan never went through.”

“That does not make the signature mine.”

“I was trying to save the house.”

“You were trying to fund Northline.”

He shook his head violently.

“You don’t understand business.

You never did.”

Daniel stepped between us.

“She understands enough to keep records.

That appears to be more than you expected.”

He informed Ethan that the firm was placing him on immediate administrative leave.

His access to company systems, accounts, and offices would be suspended pending an independent audit.

Robert Kane would be suspended as well.

Lila laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

“You said marrying me would make you partner by the end of the year.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Marriage has no influence on partnership decisions.
