women.

He arranged them around his ambition.

One provided access, another admiration, another an unborn child he could use as proof of a future he had not earned.

Irene pressed a hand to her stomach.

Valeria felt grief, but not for their friendship.

That had died on the phone.

She grieved for the years she had offered honestly to people who treated honesty as something exploitable.

Evan collected the documents Samuel had provided.

“Priya and I are calling an emergency board meeting tonight,” he said.

“Daniel, effective immediately, you are suspended from operational authority pending an internal investigation.”

“You cannot suspend the founder.”

Priya held his gaze.

“Read the bylaws you made us sign.

A majority of disinterested directors can suspend any officer where fraud or self-dealing is credibly alleged.

You insisted on that clause when you wanted to remove Martin Cole.”

Daniel remembered.

Everyone could see it.

The weapon he had built for someone else now fit perfectly in Priya’s hand.

His phone began to vibrate.

Then Evan’s.

Then Priya’s.

Samuel had not contacted the staff, but lenders had begun asking questions because the expected investment confirmation had not arrived.

Daniel had spent weeks telling people the funding was certain.

He had signed a lease for a larger office, extended offers to twelve new hires, and negotiated a credit line based on projected capitalization.

Without Richard’s money, the promises were no longer signs of growth.

They were evidence of recklessness.

Daniel looked at Valeria one final time.

“Tell your father to fund the company.

Not me—the company.

Save the employees, and I will give you whatever divorce terms you want.”

For a moment, she heard the husband she had once believed in.

Not because he sounded loving, but because he knew exactly which part of her to target.

She cared about innocent employees.

She cared about Priya and Evan.

She did not want receptionists, analysts, and junior consultants to lose their jobs because Daniel had treated the firm like a personal vault.

Richard waited for her answer.

He would have refused Daniel without hesitation, but this decision belonged to her.

Valeria looked at Priya.

“Can the company survive without him?”

Priya considered the question honestly.

“Not in its current form.

But the client work is real.

The staff is strong.

With emergency governance and a smaller capital plan, parts of it can survive.”

Valeria turned to her father.

“Would you consider investing after Daniel is removed, the books are audited, and the employees are protected?”

Daniel’s eyes brightened, misunderstanding her immediately.

“Valeria—”

She raised one hand.

“Not through you.

Not with your shares intact.

Not with your name controlling anything.”

Richard looked at Priya and Evan.

“Submit a clean proposal after the investigation.

No promises.

But I will review it.”

Relief crossed Priya’s face for the first time that night.

Daniel looked stunned.

Valeria had done what he never could.

She had separated the institution from the man who believed he owned it.

She had protected innocent people without protecting him from consequences.

The emergency board meeting began before midnight.

By two in the morning, Daniel had been suspended, his access to Sterling Crest’s systems revoked, and an outside firm appointed to conduct a full forensic audit.

Within a week, the board voted to remove him as chief executive.
