not like mustard.

John accepted this as important information.

On their third date, Olivia found out that John’s expensive-looking watch had belonged to his father and that he had worn it for twelve years.

On their fourth, John learned that Olivia chose inexpensive meals because the custody battle had drained her savings, not because she expected him to pay for everything.

Months later, he helped her build a simple budgeting application for teachers at her preschool.

She helped him stop speaking to children as if they were unusually small employees.

Noah continued asking questions no adult would dare ask.

“Are you going to marry Mommy?” he asked one morning while John was assembling a bookshelf.

Olivia nearly dropped a stack of picture books.

John looked at Noah.

“That is a serious question.”

“I ask serious questions.”

“You asked me yesterday if astronauts can eat pancakes on the moon.”

“That was also serious.”

John glanced at Olivia.

She was blushing, but she was smiling.

“Your mom and I are taking our time,” he said.

Noah nodded thoughtfully.

“Okay.

But you can stay for pizza.”

A year after the blind date, they returned to the same restaurant.

Denise had saved their original table by the window.

The waiter recognized Noah immediately and brought him a cup with a lid before anyone asked.

Olivia arrived on time, wearing both shoes properly tied.

Her hair was down, and the diaper bag had been replaced by a smaller backpack covered in dinosaur patches.

John stood when she approached.

She looked at the empty chair beside him.

“No disaster tonight?”

“Give Noah time.”

Noah climbed into the booth and placed Sir Chomp-a-Lot in the center of the table.

John ordered pizza, pasta, and fries.

“That is still too much food,” Olivia said.

“Then we’ll have leftovers.”

She laughed because she remembered.

The first date had not revealed Olivia at her most polished.

It had revealed her carrying a sleeping child, surviving humiliation, and trying to remain gentle while someone weaponized her exhaustion against her.

It had also revealed John—not as the wealthy stranger Caleb assumed could be frightened away, but as a man who knew when to stand beside someone without standing in front of her.

After dinner, Noah fell asleep against Olivia’s shoulder again.

John picked up the backpack and held the restaurant door open.

Olivia paused beside him.

“You know, I really did think you were going to leave that night.”

“I thought about it.”

She raised an eyebrow.

“For approximately three seconds,” he added.

“Then your son told me I looked expensive.”

From Olivia’s shoulder, Noah opened one eye.

“You still do,” he mumbled.

John laughed, and Olivia leaned her head briefly against his arm.

Nothing about their first meeting had gone according to plan.

That was why neither of them would have changed it.
