STORY PART 5 — Her First Contract Husband Died—Then His Mother Came for Me

4.9Editorial score

I placed the red envelope on the table and removed Julian’s original contract.

The authentic final page contained no death clause.

A forensic document examiner had compared the signatures, printer marks, and timestamps overnight.

The replacement page in the company file had been printed from Cale’s office three days after Julian’s death.

Cale’s face turned gray.

Regina connected the laptop to the conference screen.

The garage footage began playing.

Patrick appeared beside Julian’s car.

He looked directly toward the security camera, realized it was there, and pulled his cap lower.

Then he reached beneath the vehicle and removed a small tool from his pocket.

The next clip came from Julian’s private recording.

“Patrick has been moving company funds through Hawthorne Strategic Group,” Julian said.

“Martin Cale prepared the contracts.

I confronted Patrick tonight.

He said Regina would lose everything before he allowed an audit.

If anything happens to me, check the brake assembly and compare the replacement page of my marriage agreement.”

Patrick pointed at the screen.

“Fabricated.”

Detective Ruiz placed photographs on the table.

“The mechanic who inspected Julian’s car preserved the damaged brake component.

New testing found tool marks matching equipment recovered this morning from a storage unit leased by Hawthorne Strategic Group.”

Patrick turned toward Cale.

That single glance did more damage than any confession.

Cale began speaking rapidly.

“I drafted documents.

I had no knowledge of any vehicle.

Patrick told me Julian had threatened the family and that the contract needed to protect Ms.

Albright.”

“Shut up,” Patrick said.

“You said nobody would examine the original because you had destroyed it.”

The room went still.

Cale realized what he had admitted.

Patrick lunged across the table, but two officers restrained him.

His gold signet ring struck the glass with a sharp crack.

Arthur watched his son struggle.

Then the old man began to cry.

“I knew about the money,” he said.

Regina turned toward him.

Arthur’s voice shook.

“I did not know about the car.

But I knew Patrick was stealing.

I refused the audit because I thought public scandal would ruin us.

I told myself I was protecting the company.”

“You were protecting him,” Regina said.

Arthur lowered his eyes.

“Yes.”

Celeste rose from her chair.

“This family will not be humiliated in front of employees and police.”

Evelyn faced her.

“My son is dead.

Your humiliation is not the emergency in this room.”

Celeste had no answer.

Patrick was arrested on suspicion of murder, conspiracy, fraud, evidence tampering, and embezzlement.

Cale was taken into custody shortly afterward.

Investigators seized company servers and froze the shell accounts Julian had identified.
