STORY PART 5 — Her Husband Gave His Mistress the Credit—Then Genevieve Opened the Folder

4.9Editorial score

Not a beautiful apology.

Nathaniel was rarely beautiful when no one was watching.

But an honest one.

Genevieve handed her phone to the producer with the recording already selected.

Nathaniel spoke immediately.

“Genevieve, I know I said the chapter was mine.

I was angry.

You wrote it.

You wrote the damn thing, and you know I can’t finish this book without you.

Call me.”

The studio went silent.

No dramatic music.

No shouting.

Only Nathaniel’s own voice hanging in the air between them.

Chloe stared at him.

The host did not speak for several seconds.

Nathaniel finally said, “That was a private argument between a husband and wife.”

Genevieve nodded.

“Yes.”

“You’re weaponizing our marriage.”

Genevieve looked at him steadily.

“No.

I’m correcting the record you changed tonight.”

That landed harder than anger would have.

Nathaniel turned toward the host.

“My wife is understandably hurt by changes to this segment, and I think everyone should be careful about turning a personal disagreement into some accusation of professional misconduct.”

There it was.

The move Genevieve had expected.

Make her emotional.

Make him reasonable.

Transform evidence into marital drama.

Genevieve had written that playbook too.

So she opened the folder to the final set of pages.

“These are not messages between husband and wife,” she said.

“These are notes between Nathaniel and the publishing team.”

The host read silently.

Genevieve continued.

“In one, Nathaniel says the public story works better if my role stays private.

In another, he tells the team that I rebuilt the manuscript.

Those statements were made long before Chloe was presented tonight as his creative partner.”

Chloe’s voice became defensive.

“Nathaniel told me Genevieve gave occasional notes.”

Genevieve believed her.

That was the strangest part.

For the first time that evening, Genevieve saw that Nathaniel had not merely lied beside Chloe.

He had lied to Chloe too.

He had built two women into different versions of the same story and expected neither one to compare notes.

Nathaniel turned toward Chloe.

“This isn’t the time.”

Chloe stared at him.

“You told me she barely touched the manuscript.”

Nathaniel’s jaw tightened.

The host leaned back slightly.

Genevieve said nothing.

She did not need to.
