STORY PART 5 — My Husband Thanked His Mistress—Then My Lawyer Entered the Garden

But it was the first honest sentence she had offered me.

“No,” I said.

“It didn’t.”

Matthew turned on her.

“After everything I gave you—”

“You gave me stolen money and promises you never intended to keep,” she replied.

Two men in dark suits entered through the garden gate.

They were not police officers.

They were corporate security personnel sent by the board to retrieve Matthew’s company devices and access cards.

One of them held out his hand.

“Mr.

Harrow, we need your phone, laptop, building credentials, and company credit cards.”

Guests stepped aside as though a physical line had formed between Matthew and everyone who had once admired him.

He looked around the garden for an ally.

Daniel would not meet his eyes.

His mother sat crying.

Vanessa stared at the ground.

Even the investors who had laughed at his jokes an hour earlier now watched him with the cold attention reserved for a liability.

He removed his wallet and threw the company cards onto the table.

“This isn’t over.”

Evelyn gathered them calmly.

“No.

The audit has barely started.”

Corporate security escorted him toward the house to collect his laptop.

Before he reached the terrace, he stopped and looked back at me.

For a moment, the anger disappeared.

I saw fear instead.

“Where am I supposed to go?”

The question might have broken me once.

Then I remembered the Brooklyn apartment, the hidden accounts, and the recording in which he calculated the best time to abandon me without damaging his reputation.

“That stopped being my responsibility when you made another woman part of our marriage.”

He left without another word.

The party ended quietly.

Guests offered apologies, embraces, and promises of support.

Some were sincere.

Others were motivated by embarrassment or self-preservation.

I accepted none of their explanations that day.

Rachel helped the caterers box the untouched food.

Evelyn remained until every folder had been secured.

The board chairman apologized for ignoring warning signs because Matthew delivered strong quarterly reports.

By sunset, the white tents looked less like decorations and more like the remains of a stage after the audience had gone home.

I sat alone for a while beside the ruined cake table.

The photograph of Matthew kissing Vanessa still rested against the white gift box.

I turned it facedown.

The months that followed were not easy.

The audit uncovered more than the affair.

Matthew had falsified invoices, redirected investor funds, and concealed liabilities from the board.

The company recovered a large portion of the missing money by freezing the Delaware account and selling assets purchased through the shell companies.

Vanessa cooperated with investigators.

She returned the jewelry and surrendered her claim to the Brooklyn apartment.

Her testimony established that Matthew had directed the transfers, though she still faced civil consequences for signing documents she knew were misleading.

Matthew fought everything.

He challenged the trust agreement, accused the board of conspiracy, and claimed I had manipulated him during a vulnerable period.

Each argument collapsed beneath records bearing his signature and messages written in his own words.

The divorce was finalized the following year.
