STORY PART 6 — He Abandoned His Pregnant Wife—Then Her Father Opened the Property Folder

the cot Eric had once complained took up too much space.

Above it, I hung a framed photograph of four generations of women in my family: my grandmother, my mother, me, and Rose.

The blue property folder went back into my father’s safe.

I kept one copy of the deed in my own locked drawer, not because I expected Eric to return, but because I had learned the value of knowing exactly what belonged to me.

The house was one of those things.

My voice was another.

Some evenings, when Rose refused to sleep, I walked with her through the quiet rooms.

I thought about the woman I had been on that pavement, one hand on a garden wall, still trying to convince herself that her husband’s cruelty might have an innocent explanation.

I no longer felt ashamed of her.

She had been frightened, but she had kept moving.

Three houses had been enough to reach someone kind.

One honest statement had been enough to begin.

The last time I saw Eric, it was during a supervised family court review.

He sat across the room in a pressed shirt, looking smaller without a house, a locked door, or my silence to hide behind.

He said he hoped one day I would forgive him.

I looked at the man who had left me in labour because my pain interfered with his plans.

“Forgiveness is not permission,” I said.

“And it is not a way back in.”

Then I picked up Rose’s carrier and walked out with my family beside me.

Outside, rain had begun to darken the pavement.

This time, I had my phone, my keys, my daughter, and somewhere safe to go.
