revenge.

It looked like physical therapy for her injured feet.

It looked like changing phone numbers, relearning how to sleep, and sitting through long silences in a counselor’s office.

It looked like returning to the cottage after the forged deed was voided and painting the front door yellow because Ethan had always hated bright colors.

One evening, nearly a year after she appeared on my porch, snow began falling again.

Lily stood at the window watching it gather across the garden.

I expected her to close the curtains.

Instead, she opened the front door.

Cold air moved through the hallway.

She stepped onto the porch wearing thick socks, sturdy boots, and the red coat she had bought with her own money.

I followed with two cups of tea.

For a while, we watched the snow in silence.

“I used to think that night was the worst moment of my life,” she said.

“Wasn’t it?”

“It was the night I thought I had lost everything.

But it was also the first night I stopped protecting him.”

I handed her a cup.

The porch light shone across the path she had once crossed barefoot and terrified.

The snow covered every footprint, but it did not erase what had happened.

Nothing could.

That was not the same as being trapped by it.

Lily leaned her head against my shoulder.

“You opened the door,” she said.

I looked at the warm light spilling from the house behind us.

“You were the one who made it there.”

She smiled, small but real.

Then we stepped back inside together, and this time, the door closed because she chose to close it.
